I got a white blond '50's classic Telecaster a couple of years ago. I never played it too much 'cause 1st of all I'm mostly an organ player and 2nd, I never got used to the thick neck. Anyways, it hung on the wall a lot of the time looking pretty, but I've noticed the pickguard, which had been white, has turned a pretty deep creme/yellow color. The room it's in is pretty bright, but it's never been in the direct sunlight. Anyways, I realized I never took the protective plastic film off the pickguard - could this have anything to do with the fact that the pickguard changed color so drastically? Even more weird, I took the pickguard off, and the back of it is still white, but the Telecaster's white blond finish behind the pickguard has also turned very yellow! Could this be connected with the pickguard changing color? The only other weird thought I had was that Fender, trying to create some kind of vintage effect, actually colored the area behind the pickguard the color an original '50's Telecaster would have been and colored the rest of the guitar as if it had been fading for 60 years! That's a long way to go for authenticity - especially since most people would never even notice it... Any ideas on this one...?

I can't confirm if the protective plastic on the pickguard caused it to discolor any faster then normal but the body fading is normal and most noticeable on lighter colors. Considering you had it hanging on a wall and not in a good case that would accelerate the discoloring/fading process, which is normal. I highly doubt on a non custom shop relic model would they do a different tint under the PG then the rest of it so it just seems to me like normal fade from invisible environmental elements. Sometimes when used a lot in clubs where there is a lot of smoking or kept in a smoking environment the opposite happens and the body will be lighter under the pickguard.

To me it just sounds like natural discoloration, for a display piece. It's not like it was in a case, right?
