It's rare but these deals are still out there. Some people have no idea what they have and don't bother checking eBay etc or do any research. My mom is in the antiques business and more times then you would expect pays a few bucks for items worth hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars. It also helps if you have an eye for these things. She goes to yard sales, flea markets, thrift stores, garage sales, estate sales etc every week. Of course whenever she sees a guitar she calls me because those she does not know much about. However I told her to pay special attention to anything that says Gibson or Fender on it.

I am a full time antique dealer and when you are out looking all the time you are bound to find cool stuff. I recently missed a small town consignment auction and another guy bought for $75 a gibson acoustic guitar case. thats all he wanted was the case. Inside was a Larson brothers acoustic from chicago. brought $47,000 on ebay. If i would have been there that day i would have probably owned it for lest than $200. so there are deals out there all the time. Probably some attic is holding a burnt fender strat that Hendrix played, Just collecting dust and waiting for one of you guys to find it !!!!

I guy I knew back from my NYC days is Joe P. from Storage Wars. He got over $100,000 for some prints. Granted with storage unit auctions you are going in kind of blind so it is not quite the same as a yard or estate sale and more of a gamble but it just goes to show some people either don't know the value of what they have, or don't care for some reason.

There was recently a storage unit auction in my area and I went to it. It had a bunch of PA stuff and a few guitar cases. I knew the PA stuff was only worth a few hundred (assuming it all worked) as it was no name but it was killing me because they would not let me touch anything or open the guitar cases. I stopped bidding at 200 and the room went for 800. The guy who won let me look in the cases so I could appraise the guitars for him and they were cheap guitars..the best was a Korean Squier. The room was not worth 800.

i stay away from storage auctions just because people are a little to crazy after seeing the TV show. I know a guy who paid 2800 for an entire storage full of boxes labeled antiques. they were all full of clothes. I think the storage building owners set him up. poor guy !

Yeah there are shady people in every business. We see tons of fake guitars on this forum and others from CL and eBay and even "reputable" dealers and even antiques now are being replicated and counterfeited. But as far as storage units it is a gamble either way. The ones who really know what they are doing seem to do okay and you can't judge everything by a reality TV show. That said the one time I did it saw a guy overpay for a unit. There was nothing dishonest about it and everyone had a fair shot but when things are hidden in boxes and cases it is a total crap shoot regardless of what is written on the boxes.

The guy from the show that I know (Joe P.) has been doing the storage auctions for like 20 years and according to reports his net worth is approx 2 million. So he is doing something right.

So all of this begs the question....
What did you pay for this guitar at the garage sale without the case, where has this guitar been for the last 50 years, and where was the garage sale?

So, Mr. Unwinded, are you going to tell us the story on this guitar or not?

Correct on the price i paid $2.50. I dont like to post where i find my items. Being a full time antiques dealer i try to protect the area that i go hunting in as it has been great place to find stuff. on another note, since i have bought this i have been playing it a lot and it really plays amazingly. cant get enough of it :)
