In my search for a new guitar,I came across a muddy waters tribute guitar.thought it would be cool but was suprised to find its a Mexican made telecaster.not that it's a bad thing but the seller wants more than what USA made telecasters are going for.what's a fair value for one of these?its in excellent condition with hard shell case

So, I used to own one of these guitars, and they are awesome! Great sounding Telecaster with very nice pickups and a great look.

I baught the guiter new in 2004 for about $500. I sold the guitar for $475. According to my 2014 Vintage Guitar Magazine price guide, a fair market value for this guitar in excellent condition is between $525 - $650.

A few facts about this particular model:
1. It's not a tribute model, it's a signature model (made from 2001-2009)
2. MIM
3. Candy Apple red, white single-ply pickguard, Muddy Waters name on neck plate, 3 brass barrel saddles and have the words, "Custom Telecaster" on the headstock.
3. The Custom Shop ones, the actual tribute Teles, are all beat up looking. If the seller claims that is Custom Shop model, don't buy it unless it comes with the COA.

If you want to look up what the MIM model looks like, type the words, "Muddy Waters" Telecaster into your search brouser. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. I have photos if need them. I hope this helps and good luck!

Thanks..the "tribute" part were my words, not the sellers.i didn't know anything about these telecasters before I saw the add.The tele is what he claims it to be,theres no issue there.i just assumed it was American because of his asking price.when I discovered it was Mexican I hesitated to buy it but it is a sweet guitar.i just wanted some opinions on value.your estimate is pretty much what I was willing to pay( 600 max).seller wants alot more because it's a discontinued model that was a limited production..and basically mint condition.

Looks like they had 2 American Vintage Tele® Single-Coil Pickups (Neck/Bridge), with Special Staggered Alnico 5 Magnets in the Bridge Pickup.

The Seller wants too much for it. It's not likely a model which will appreciate much over time, despite what the Seller thinks.

Even though it's discontinued now, Fender made many of them and it's not difficult to find one at all, though in most cases you'll be buying on faith w/o being able to try it first (internet, eBay, etc.).

cheers!

If the guitar is in very good condtion, I would buy it, but I would not pay anymore than $550. As to the collectability aspect, This is factory production guitar which Fender made countless. I can't imagine them gaining a lot of value.

If you are not used to old school Tele bridges, you might find that annoying when it comes to set up. Each brass barrel intonate two strings (i.e. 1 barrel intonates the low "E" and "A" at the same time).

I was very intrested but not at almost a grand.lol...eBay pricing I guess...and no,I don't have any experience with the old school tele bridges but if it was an issue I could swap it out..it appears muddy swapped his out also..I've found some nice American telecasters in the 600-800 dollar range which might be worth checking out.ive noticed a couple sellers state they have changed over to a 6 saddle set up or a staggered barrel setup.callaham seems to be a brand name that keeps popping up.ive been learning alot in my search... :D

I'm glad that you have found something you like. I love Telecasters, but I'm predominately a Stratocaster player. About every 7 or 8 months so, I go back to playing a Telecaster a for several months. Some how I end up wondering back my Stratocaster. Currently I'm playing '75 and '76 Stratocasters.

Check out pictures of my current home built Andy Summers inspired Telecaster.

I actually sold a couple of my ibanez guitars that weren't being used with the intentions of buying an American strat..after looking online for a bit i started wanting a telecaster..I may still get an american strat but I already have two Mexican made strats I'm quite happy with.im not even totally set on an American tele.my mexi strats work well enough for me so a mexican tele is an option.i just didn't think a Mexican made muddy waters signature telecaster was worth more than an American made telecaster...which is why I was asking..... :D

That price is, quite honestly, absurd, assuming it's MIM and not an actual custom shop piece.

I just got into Tele's recently as well...I played Strats (all American & American deluxe) for my single coil needs and I own a couple of PRS guitars for my humbucking needs. I'm not sure why I never really looked at the MIM Strats when I was buying, I've since played them and they're nice guitars...I'd personally replace the pots and tuners on one first if I grabbed one, then maybe the pickups. However, I picked up the MIM ash 72' Hollowbody Tele and it's a bloody amazing guitar with zero modifications thus far. I own an American deluxe Tele as well, and while the MIM doesn't feel quite as smooth in areas like fret finishing I enjoy playing it as much as I do the deluxe - the humbuckers in it can get a nice, dark and nasty tone but I still get that Tele twang when I'm playing through a clean on crunch setup on any of my amps. Just my experience, ymmv. :)
