I am primarily a Strat guy but always had a soft spot for Teles and recently acquired 8 unfinished USA 50s and 60s spec tele bodies at a good deal. I will eventually get to them and thought about doing a Paisley on at least one of them since I always liked those.

I did some research and have seen older posts in other forums asking the same thing as far as getting the paper with the exact design/color Fender uses. It seems it is not easy or even possible to get and Fender is hoarding whatever they have left for repairs etc.

Now I have found fairly similar paper but was wondering if anyone here knows a source that I can find something closer to or just like what Fender uses or am I S.O.L. and have to make due with something different. I also read someone is reproducing them from computer graphics taken off an actual Fender Paisley and I guess I could figure that out but it would be so much easier if I could just buy a sheet of it without dealing with computers and finding an actual one to copy etc.

Thanks.

I've seen some DIY paisley projects. IIRC one used something that looked like cloth, another used what may have been a wallpaper.

I don't know where one would find old fashioned paisley wallpaper! 8)

I guess that's why we have Google!

Yeah I googled for hours under paisley wallpaper and shelf paper and had to scour through hundreds of prints only to realize none of them were quite the same. Has far as cloth I would not even bother trying to lacquer that into a guitar. Since Fender used wallpaper it has to exist somewhere but apparently all that ever existed of that exact pattern and color was discontinued, impossible to find again, and Fender purchased all of it and holding on to it for dear life. I guess I was hoping that was not true and someone out there knew where to get some but I might have better luck trying to find a freaking leprechaun lol.

Most of the prints I found were that were even somewhat close were like this.. Image

And Fender uses this..... Image

Found a guy selling what looks to be dead on. Only problem is he wants $200 a sheet, 2 required per body. Not gonna happen. Guess if I can not figure out a way to duplicate it on my own then I will just do something different. I might want to make my own but not at $400 for paper worth closer to $4.00.

I don't really like the pink and blue paisleys I've seen on Fenders.

Personally, I'd try to find some earth tones or maroon or orange/yellows.

Good luck.

I kind of understand what you mean but the first time I saw one it just intrigued me. It was an original USA (68 I guess?) and was at a friend of mines friends high end vintage shop. Now this is going back like 15 years and even back then I remember he was asking such a high price that I thought it was a one of a kind. Then I realized that other ones I were seeing pop up at more realistic prices (but still high) were Japanese reissues. I guess it is one of those cases where I want something but saving money by building my own replica but be as close to authentic as possible. If I go through with this not using the authentic paper then I might as well do something totally different. I actually considered orange since I have never seen a paisley Fender in that color.

Since your creation won't be an actual paisley edition, I think it would be cool if you created your own paisley color scheme.

Agree and I might not have a choice since it seems if I could even get the correct paper it would cost as much as a new MIM Strat and I don't feel like dealing with graphics programs to make my own. Might as well go different.

I Googled and found a Brad Paisley Gear page. He has quite a few different color paisleys.
Check 'em out.

Thanks. Yeah with a name like he has it makes sense to use a few paisley guitars. I notice at least on a tele it is original and he has the money for it. I noticed a nice blue one that is using the identical pattern and type as the original pinks. Many mistake the blue "Floral" for a paisley and they are quite different. I imagine if Fender did not make those for him someone with better skills then myself was able to reproduce the exact identical paper for him in other colors. I won't quite have that luxury but it was still good to see to get ideas. There really is a lot of very cool looking paisley paper available I could use but it will never pass as the type Fender uses. So I figure I may as well go totally different. Might fake someone out at 150 yards lol.

I planned to do this on a strat I built recently. However I wanted to use some stunning black white and green patterned fabric I found. However:

Fabric just won't work. When it gets wet with either glue or lacquer, it goes patchy and looks crap. Thick paper or nothing from my experience.

It is much easier to do a std tele body than the contoured, shaped strat body.

I will have another go at some point on a tele. Ideally I'd like to use the pattern I have, but getting it from fabric to wallpaper is unlikely.

I really like a couple of Brad Paisley's brown paisley guitars. The pattern was positioned poorly on one of them, however. So I guess positioning is critical to success!

Yeah I would not even attempt to lacquer fabric to a guitar body even if it looked just like the fender paper. I just can't imagine that working out too well. You can have the pattern converted to paper but need to find someone good enough with the program to do it if like myself you are not familiar with that sort of thing.

On the paisley teles they use a clear pickguard so they really only had to lay it straight and not worry about much else. On the Strats they used a paisley pickguard and the ones I have seen they did not bother matching it up so it looks like a bit of a messup. But yes if doing something like this it pays to make sure all is positioned right before lacquer.

It is interesting to note the original pink ones tend to turn gold. Probably the nitro yellowing. If you note in this pic you can still see remnants of the pick under the clear pickguard. That one is an authentic Fender from the 60s and worth a fortune.
