I'm too lazy to get a Graph Tech and file it to spec and too cheap for the moment to take it to a pro for a custom made one. Where to get a pre slotted one I could just put on? Does Fender sell em?

Tusk from Graph tech sell some slotted. I see 2 models in Stew Mac 2014 catalog.

Don't know if the will fit without any work .

IMO nut is so important , wait until you have money for a good nut by a luthier 60$ to $75 (?).

Lol figures it broke on me today. Been waiting about 3 weeks to get a chance to play it.

You're right about putting a higher quality piece on there but I got another guitar I'm building and that's getting the upgraded treatment for the time being. I called up my guitar shop and they'll check and let me know if they can get a genuine Fender nut.

Ahhhh. Guess Ill just play my vintage modified tele today. :/

The same issue (a nut that is a drop-in replacement) just came up on the Strat side of the forum: Pre-slotted bone nut

I ain' gon' be no forum police (that reads like a beginning to a mournful blues song...), but come on...
You want a "luxury" item like a bone/TUSQ nut, but you don't want to fit it yourself, and don't want to pay a pro to do it.
Something in the equation is totally wrong... 8)

It broke down the low e string slot. The original owner had bumped the nut from the high e string side at one point, the nut was shifted over due to this and the guitar was left like that for years. Reseating the nut meant I had to tap it to it's correct position. Im sure the stress of these two events fatigued it at the slot and well...here I am playing and CRACK! ;)

Currently on my other guitar I am doing all of the following myself: I just replaced the bridge and tailpiece with Gotoh parts. Am finishing installation of Grover Imperial tuners. I rounded the neck binding. Polished the frets and oiled the board. Have purchased 4 push pull pots, pio capacitors, switchcraft toggle and have a Seymour Duncan Jb and 59 that will get installed soon.

So.....yeah I'm not eager to take on any more fabrication than I'm doing now or want to pay anybody. Just want to pull the old one off and pop a new one in its place. With the stock nut on the Tele I had a perfectly functioning setup. This 72 reissue is the only guitar I have that is as good as gold in stock form. Tuners could be more stable, but other than that...

You could have had a dozen filed and fitted in the time it took this thread to get to this point.

Don't be lazy :P

Last time I was at the local Guitar Center, they had a wide selection of ready-to-go nuts in 2-3 different materials, including Fender replacements.
