Fender uses "wide range" humbuckers.

The new ones are WR Humbuckers in name only. If you open them up they're just a standard humbucker inside, similar to the DH-1. In a rather cynical marketing move Fender simply made the covers look like the old WRHB's, photo here shows a "reissue" and an original side by side ...

A real Wide Range uses a different alloy for the magnets and has a sound unlike any other humbucking pickup.

Original Wide Ranges employ CuNiFe magnets.

For those seeking that authentic CuNiFe sound check out the following link:

Too many questions if I'm sure I want to do this ... and yes, I am. The tele configuration (2 singles) is not tonally very good for my playing style, but on the other hand my tele is a nice guitar, neck, feel .. This Tele has Van Zandt pups (4 position switch).

Recently I've heard another tele with the Seymour Duncan Fire-bird p/up and it sounded fine to my ears. That's one of the options.

I was also thinking Gibson 490R for neck. Tele can sound very jazzy with the right p/ups.

Anyone with other buckers in the neck position?!

Hi, I did this mod on my 2013 MIM standard Telecaster, I think it's really the best thing I could have done for it.

The one I put in was a "Powered by Lace" Neck Humbucker, you can look them up on Ebay and note that the price is extremely low. That is due to the import factor (as in, imports are cheaper). In my opinion it sounds as good as any of the humbuckers in my other guitars (e.g. burstbucker pro in my Les Paul Studio). So if project cost is any concern, you should consider this product. They look and sound great.

My tele was prerouted for a neck humbucker. so the mod took about 20 minutes to complete. I had to get a new pickguard as well. I use this pickup about half the time I'm playing my Tele, sometimes I really need that single coil twang (from the bridge pickup).

I'm contemplating the same thing. I have a Lollar humbucker and Seymour Duncan JB humbucker and two extra pickguards ready for a humbucker . I have three tele's and one of them (Am Std) came from the factory already routed for a three PUP system that could take humbuckers. My plan is to splice the wires and use an 1/8" plug to connect the pickup and try out the different sounds. Don't ask when I'll get around to it. I'll post it when/if I get around to it.
Good luck and let us know how it works out.

I got around to putting my Lollar in last night and I like it. Later this week I will have a friend of mine try it out. Here's a very talented working musician and a hell of a player. I may have him take it for a week or two and get a good report. Tele was already routed out so it went in real easy. While I was at it I added some locking strap buttons and a set of locking tuners.

The American Standard Telecaster is now available with a dual humbucker setup. Not listed in the products page yet.

I recently bought a MIA Standard Tele from 2005 and (I'm really not sure what type of pickups were issued on this year -anyone happen to know BTW?), but when I first demo played it before I bought it I thought it sounded good. After getting it home, doing a complete new set-up with new strings and a good clean, I now find it now to be not just "good" but "amazing"! When I switch between the bridge and neck pickups I notice a much more thicker tone with much more bass than the bridge. To me, I can't understand why anyone would want to potentially de-value their guitar modifying it. Why not buy a '72 Deluxe Tele (or something similar) in the first place?
Have you tried doing or getting a full setup done on it? Pickup height can change the sound a lot that's all.
I'm really happy with the neck pickup on mine -would love to know what sort it is! Maybe you could try a set if I find out!?
Otherwise, I would definately go for the Seymour Duncan humbuckers that are the same shape as a normal single coil so you don't have to modify the body at all. Just my opinion!
Good luck with it all anyway mate!

PS: I just tried to quickly google the specs of a 2005 MIA Standard Tele and couldn't find much info except on the new Standard Tele's...oh well!

I just found the specs for my 2005 MIA STandard Tele and it says they were fitted with 2 American Tele single coil pickups. Pretty vague. I'm not sure if they are available to buy in the Custom Shop or not. I've got a feeling they were just made for that period model Tele.

Concerning humbucker pickups; I find that I like mine to sound older - "mellower." I've owned several Les Pauls and a ES335, and I didn't really like the pickups they came with. They were nice, but not for me.

The human ear is a fickle thing.

I have an 05 60th ann US tele that came with the humbucker in the neck and S1 switch and must say it kicks butt. The variety of tones makes it very versatile.

The Seymour Duncan mini-hum that came on my 1952 Vintage Hot Rod Tele is just fabulous. It's great for rock but it's also great for the creamiest, smooth jazz tones you'd ever hear.BTW: Ed Bickert the famous Toronto jazz guitarist has played nothing but a standard Tele for 50 years or more,if you picked up some of his recordings, you'd be able to hear just how versatile the Tele can be.

The hot-rodded American Vintage '52 was offered with a full-sized Seymour Duncan SH1-59N humbucker in 2011 as a part of the Telebration series; it also boasted a fully intonatable bridge.

No longer produced.

The hot-rodded American Vintage '50s is similar, except for the addition of a Wide Range humbucking pickup.
