:D

Looking to get a full sounding neck hum-bucker for my Tele.

I was thinking of an old Gibson bucker but also saw a few Bill Lawrence (new ones) that looked good to me.

Please suggest what would be the best solution for that jazz tone in neck position.

Thanks!

Do you have any room for humbucker pickup on your Tele body ?

I believe I will need to widen the cavity, unless there is some kind of small bucker that can fit in. :x

I already have a mint green pick-guard for the project .. the pick-up choice is now the question. :?:

I was also contemplating a Gibson DeLuxe mini hum-bucker ..

Do you have any suggestions?

Are you sure you want transforming your guitar into a "Fat" Telecaster SH?

+1 !

I would never take a guitar I remotely liked and mod it in hopes of 'improving' it.

Right now, my main goal is learning to better play the guitars I have as is.

But, when/if I get to the stage where I feel I need to 'improve' or individualize a guitar for me, I'll search for a good used guitar at a reasonable price to use as the Test Mule.

Certainly there are others who don't share my view, and that's OK... it's their guitar and their $$$.

Good Luck !

cheers!

+1 Lightnin MN

On the other way , improving or modding guitar is a good way to learn , wood working , soldering electronics ....but it cost often more money than buying another guitar you can test before

I thought its a pretty simple task - getting a mini bucker, cutting the p/guard, wiring, and BANG, done.

And yes, I like my tele but not very impressed with the single coil in neck position, as I'm doing a bit on jazz at this time, and need to fatten the tone. In fact I was always eye-balling the 1972 Thinline with 2 buckers, ... still looking for a good one, but thought this mod may help for a time being.

Anyway, not a single suggestion as to pickup as yet.

Anyone? :?:

I'm contemplating the same thing. I have a Lollar humbucker and Seymour Duncan JB humbucker and two extra pickguards ready for a humbucker . I have three tele's and one of them (Am Std) came from the factory already routed for a three PUP system that could take humbuckers. My plan is to splice the wires and use an 1/8" plug to connect the pickup and try out the different sounds. Don't ask when I'll get around to it. I'll post it when/if I get around to it.
Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Fender uses "wide range" humbuckers. I have heard of people using Seymour Duncan 59s, and little 59s, which are single coil size. Good luck.

Wow, negativity much?

Many Teles come from the factory already routed for a humbucker under the pickguard. As far as I know, only the vintage lines do not already have it.

Easiest way to do this is to just purchase a pickguard pre-cut with the style of pickup you're going with. There's many places that make them (WD, Warmoth, AllParts, Fender, etc).

If you do have to route out the body, just don't butcher it and you'll be fine. It's under the pickguard, but you still don't want it to look like it was done by a child using safety scissors.

Other than that, it's pretty much just wire up and go like any other pickup change. If you want an old-school vibe the Seymour Duncan 59n is a great pickup. I've also got a Tele with the Seymour Duncan Firebird pickup (SM-1) - basically a mini HB, and it's awesome. It's the same pickup that comes stock on the Hot Rod 52 Tele.

I'm like you in that I never found a regular Tele neck pickup that really inspired me - and I tried a number of them. I like the Duncan SM-1 mini HB the best. Then the 59n for the full size.

Experimentation is part of the fun! Teles are incredibly easy to mod and if you save the stock parts (just put them away) then you can reverse any changes should you ever decide you don't like a change or if you sell the guitar. Not a single one of my guitars is 100% stock. Sometimes you change something to improve it on a practical level (intonation, tuning stability, etc), sometimes you change the tone of the guitar (pickups, bridge), and sometimes you want to personalize it so it doesn't look like something off the shelf (pickguard).

Anyway, have fun!

Look over at my profile photo. I'm using a Seymore Duncan Jazz pickup in my Telecaster. You WILL need to make the pickup route and pickguard neck whole bigger. There are aftermarket places you can goto and order the pick guard.

Send me your e-mail address, and I'll send you some sound files. Please explain you topic in the suject line so I know that it's not spam.
Good luck!
