Didn't the American Special use to be $799?

I must of missed the price increase but at nearly 1 grand I don't see how this is a deal when you can get the American Standard for only a couple hundred more with a hard case. :(

I'm hoping Fender will consider lowering the price in the future. :?

$799 may have been the street price but the msrp hasn't changed much in 2 years. If store prices are going up it isn't down to Fender

The largest Fender price hike was some time ago

American Special Telecaster
2014 (current) recommended price is $1289.99
2012 recommended price was $1249.99
2010 (first issue) recommended price was £1099.99

Standard US Telecaster
2014 (current) recommended price is $1729.99 - $1949.99
2012 recommended price was $1399.99 - $1569.99
2010 recommended price was £1299.99 - $1399.99

The new American Specials have Custom Shop Texas Special pups in it. The original just had MIM Texas specials in them that where not custom shop or made in America. Thus the reason for a price increase.

Know this post is old but just in case someone at Fender is watching. I own an American Special Start I bought new at GC. Love it and was going to buy another but after the price hike I bought my second choice from a competitor. I have now bought 3 of their guitars I would have never even had one of theirs had Fender not raised the price on the American Special.

This is not true I checked with Fender myself and I have the email.

+1

Better pickups, woods and hardware=higher prices.

The American Specials have the same PUPS they have always had, nothing has changed there. There has been two price increases they are now over 900.00

No that is not true. They now have custom shop Texas Specials and they used to have MIM texas specials. Says right on the web site listing.

- Custom Shop Texas Special™ Tele pickups for powerful Texas tone

The above line is right from Fenders overview of the guitar

I stand corrected it now says custom shop TS.

I have an email from Fender I got about a year and a half ago when I got mine explaining that the PUPS are (at that time) to the exact spec and with same materials but not made in CS.

So having the exact same PUP made in the CS cost more now.

I wonder if there is any real difference in tone?

When was the change made ? When the price went from 899.99 to 949. I guess.

Change happened to them around Oct 2013.

You can tell the difference by just looking as the pole pieces on the bridge pickup are raised, not flush like the MIM ones where. The bridge pickup is also wrapped with white string and the MiM's where wound with black. The CS ones are not as hot as the old MIM ones are. 8)

There's a lot more to any company's pricing policy than costs plus desired profit margin...

I didn't realize that there are two types of Texas Specials! if so, why aren't there two different types for sale if you go to buy them seperately?!
Also, you're kind of missing the point... -if a hard case costs $200 you basically end up paying the same price as an American Standard that gives you a SKB case for free! Know what i mean? Just makes buying the Special a bit of a rip-off!

Well - the American Standards went up as well; the MAP on them is now $1,299.99 ($1,449.99 if you want an ash body) while the American Specials are $999.99. And you don't get the SKB case any more; you get the made-in-Vietnam Pro Series tolex case (which goes for $129.99) with the American Standard.

+1

Only customers purchasing an American Deluxe guitar or bass benefitted from an SKB case until 2013.

The American Deluxes now come with a hardshell case.
