Ok so, first off i'm somewhat new to this whole building thing, also this is my first telecaster!:) anyways i decided to go with a vintage blackguard look but use different and modern parts (probably making it more of a partscaster). at this point i'm done, but it never really occurred to me to post a thread or anything like that.

Image

Here's a quick run down:
Body: swap ash, natural vintage nitro finish
Neck: Maple vintage finish
Bridge: American fender style bridge with 6 saddles
Pickguard: single ply black
Tuners: gotoh locking tuners
Pickups
Neck: Seymour duncan STK-T1n vintage stack
Bridge: Seymour duncan STK-T2b hot rail

Up to now i've basically learned that making your own guitar takes alot of time and patience... Especially when getting parts from different eras and manufactures. But i enjoy making everything "fit". Only obstacles so far were the bridge pickup cavity not being big enough having to re-route it (notice the marker lines on the picture above), Re filling the bridge holes and re-installing it , my neck not being the height i liked and running the base on a sand belt to bring it down to my desired height (check picture below, you can see the bottom of the neck sanded off).

Before fully mounting the bridge i checked how the strings would aline on the neck just to give me an idea.

Bridge is on!

alining the pickguard and control plate (and yes the pickguard didnt fit like i wanted to i had to sand it down a bit)

That quickly sums about everything i've done so far, i'm still waiting to get a few parts back (i had a defective wiring switch and tuners, i had ordered 3L 3R instead of 6-in-line... im learning haha).

Here's where i was at that point.

OK so i installed the ferrules. Wasn't to hard but certainly longer then i had expected. There was a bit of finish on the inside of the ferrules holes so i had to sand them down.
Image

And i decided to installed them like they had suggested in a video i had purchased from stew mac (Basically using the soldering iron).

Image

This made them slide in pretty smoothly but not fully like i wanted them. So i made myself a soft hammer. :)

Image

The hammer is made with (obviously) a hammer, plastic pad, foam, duck tape. Although not technically correct, it did the job great and saved a few bucks instead of getting a rubber hammer. After a good hour of work i got the hang of it and finished them.

Image

Note that the lighter spots that look like scratches are actually just the flash and excess wax from screwing in parts earlier on.

i got my tuners replaced and installed them.

Image

Also went ahead and shielded the guitar with copper foil.
Heres the pickguard, notice how you have to cut a bit off the edge so that the metal cover doesn't ground your pickup.

Image

Next i grounded the neck pickup cavity and let it fold over towards the bottom so that it grounds the pickguard.

Image

Then i did the bridge cavity and made sure that the connection with the different pieces of copper foil was uniform.

I also shielded the control cavity. Notice how there is a wire thats soldered, its connected to the neck pickup cavity. Also made it fold over the edges to come in contact with the screws from the plate.

Image

Finally i installed the electro socket. It is much easier to install then the regular tele jack cover.

Image

Next thing is to install a set of strings and check my fret height, play with the thrust rod and fix any buzzing. After that its gonna get all wired up and ready to go!

Here is the wiring of the control plate. Afterwards i had alot of trouble with this one.... turns out the coil in the bridge hot rail was busted.

I also glued the nut in place...

Thanks for documenting the process. It's always fun to look at such pictures.

Here's the only project I made:

Image

But the only wood working I had to do was drill the holes to mount the pickguard, strap buttons, and output jack plate! It's a Warmoth body.

Thanks.

Do you have a web site with your projects? I'd be interested in checking out your other guitars. I'm betting you have more than the Tele and the art-deco Strat ...

I do have other projects, no website :D....
I'm still learning alot and the only ones i followed with pictures were the two posted. I will to side jobs for some people here and there but many aren't so sure, mainly thinking i lack experience (based on my age usually, understandable).

I just finished my strat and i've been really into electronics lately (i'm currently making my own wah-wah/volume pedal).
Also been modding a few amps (valveking 8 and a super-sonic).

Next on my list is restoring my 1968 12 string EKO ranger and building a jazzmaster.

p!

Okay, well, I'm sure you'll document your new projects and I hope you'll share.

I'd like a Jazzmaster, of sorts. I don't want the short scale of the Jaguar, but I like its pickups. I don't like all of the switches/controls on those guitars. I know some will say that all of the controls are part of the charm and utility of the Jazzmaster and Jaguar, but I'm not a big user of tone controls. I'd rather just switch pickups to get tone changes. I also don't know if I'd like that kind of Trem system. I've never used one. So I like to see various Jazzmaster projects, especially non-standard ones.
