About 18 months ago I decided I was going to learn how to play guitar after wanting to since I was a 12 year old, I am now 39 with 2 kids.
So I bought a cheap Fender acoustic and started strumming. Spent time learning my chords and the diferent chord shapes. But wasn't able to play much and the action was so high on it that it was extremely uncomfortable, so I quit playing.
Then I bought a Squier starter kit and played that for a while. It was much easier and much more enjoyable to play. And financially it made the most sense, I played for a while and then life took over, ie little league, work, wife......you know the story. Anyway I didn't get to play as much as I liked but over the past 2 weeks I have been able to play everynight (almost) for at least an hour and things are starting to move along. My transitions between chords are getting better, my timing getting better, my left hand (i play lefty) getting better and basically just seeing what playing every day can do for you. Then this past weekend we were in GC, me and my family, and like always I had the guy pull the MIM Tele off the wall again for the thousanth time, and then my wife says "just go ahead and get it" and I said "What???" and she repeated herself and I did not hesitate (you married guys know what Im mean).
So now I have this great Tele that I have always wanted since I was a kid, to me they are Rock-N-Roll, and I have 2 ?'s.

1. What books, dvd's, etc would you guys rcommend to really start learning and moving to next level? I know there is no substitute for playing and now,Finally I will have some at least an hour or 2 every night.

2.I would like to get a new amp as well. All I have is the starter amp that came with the Squier. I would like to get a better amp, nothing real loud but something to grow into. Tube amps soung great but my knowledge is very limited so probably solid state is the way to go. I want something that I will eventually be able to run effects through. What do you gentlemen and women usr ir recommend?

Sorry for ramblin and thanks in advance.

I suggest the new Champion 600 tube amp. 199 dollars, 5 watts, great tone, won't get you evicted. Oh yeah and tube power. Or a G-Dec. I would rather have the Champion 600. It looks as good as it sounds.

Now to the other stuff, what kinda music do you like and want to play? Blues You Can Use is a excellent learning resource if you have blues in your blood. There is almost too much educational material available these days, so don't get caught in the tail chasing spiral like I did. I have two bookshelves of material that now collect dust.

Keep in mind that nothing replaces a good teacher!

THat is kind of were I am at.....information over load.

I like the new southern rock ( The Black Crowes, DBT, Son Volt) as well as classic rock but also classic country.

I should also mention that my whole goal is not to play "lead" guitar but more rythm. As an example I would use Rich Robinson or someone in that vein.

I still say Champion 600. Also check out a Line6 POD XT with headphones for quiet time playing. They just released a pocket size that looks really cool.

Where are you located?

Stephens City, Va . work in Fairfax Va

Are those amps big enough wattage wise to grow into. Basically I am gonna get one shot to get this right with the wife so I want to get what I can without going overboard. I don't have any asperations to play in front of people right now but I have been writing lyrics to songs which I hope to someday put music to. As me and a buddy of mine say " It only takes one good one" and who knows. :D

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about!! I too have a MIM Tele, which I got after my Squier starter pak, I opted for the Blues Junior, I wanted a tube amp that didn't cost a fortune and one that has good sound and can be turned up when knowone is home, but yet it still sounds good when the volume is very low. I am completely satisfied with the setup. And, it sounds good with these 3 pedals Overdrive - Distortion and Equalizer. I have been using the Rock House Method Learn to play DVD's, Blues Level 1 and 2 from House of Blues, I figure this will give me all the basics and then I can go to a teacher if I want. I really like them, I can go back and forth whenever I want to review the lessons. I am 47 and have been playing for 2 years now.
Good Luck, hope this helps.

Tim,
I own a Blues Jr., a Pro Jr. and Bassman '59 RI LTD. I started at age 40 @ 3 years ago in the same position as you. The Blues Jr. is a nice amp, master volume, reverb, 12 inch speaker. IF this is the ONLY amp you are going to buy then think about a Deluxe Reverb Reissue instead of the Blues Jr.

Tim,
I am @ 30 minutes from Fairfax just North of Rockville, MD. Consider an invitation to jam at my house and try out the BJ, PJ, BMRI outside a GC store.

I certainly appreciate the offer. I think this weekend I am gonna go play some at the store and see what's up. I am going to look at the Champion 600, the Blues Junior and a Peavey Classic 30 (even though it is a little over my price range and probably too much amp for my uses).

As for the Line6 pod plus, that is also on my to get list.

After that I might take you up on your offer. Thaks alot I'll get in touch through here.

Good to heard about the guitar.

As with eeverything in life: It's all a matter of taiste, but here's my take on it.

1. Take YOUR guitar to the store when you are shopping. What may sound amazing on an amp IN THE STORE might sound wrong with you guitar AT HOME. Where you play makes a difference.
2. Don't let some salesmen try and push you in a direction and remember they are selling an amp you want, not an amp they want. Tell them what you are trying get out of an amp and how much you can spend.
3. Tube amps sound best to me, but your going to PAY for them. Peavey makes some great tube amps. Solid state has come a long way too. I myself love the Line-6 Spider amps. I got my son a small one and it is great. Nice thing about it is that for the price it already comes with some effects built in and sounds good. A couple of years ago I would not have said that.
4. Bigging does not always mean better, just louder and more expensive.

My favorite Amps are as follows:
Line 6 Spider III
Heughs and Ketner
Fender Blues DeVille
Peavey Delta Blues
Peavey Clasic 50 or clasic 30

I hope this helps.

Paris

Paris has some good points.

I bought a Fender FM25DSP. It is solid state and has several effects / amp settings built into it.

Some people do not like the presets, but you might, and it is worth looking into. (Effects can get costly)

My amp only has a 10" speaker (they have a 212 version as well).

Since you are married, bring in a set of headphones. My amp sounds better through them! Check it out, because the last thing my wife wants to hear is my amp cranked up to 10.

Your budget will be your key factor.

Good luck,
Motor City Hillbilly

Thanks for all the advice guys. I really appreciate it.

Last night I went and "played" (really strummed chords but I am gettin better) on some amps at GC. I really did like the Blues Junior best. I played a Peavey Classic 30 and ut was good but too much money. The Blues Junior seems to fit the bill best.

So now all I have to do is save the ducketts. should be ok right after x-mas.

How does this setup sound to you gentlemen

MIM Telecaster
Boss BD-2 Blues Driver
Arbiter Fuzz Face
Fender Blues Junior

Does this look good or am I barkin up the wrong tree?

After further research over the weekend it looks like the Blues Jr and a Fulltone OCD and a Cats-Eye Hop Hed Fuzz pedal and maybe eventually a Vox Wah WAh. I know these are more expensive pedals but I am only gonna get to do them once so I don't mind spending a little extra (within reason) to get good quality stuff.

If I can get set up with the amp and the pedals for under $800 or so I wil be good. Thanks for all of your advice and help. It definitley was a big help in pointing me in the right direction.
