I bought this off ebay. all pictures with neck attached so couldn't see the neck stamp. seller said the neck and body were Fender MIM. After I got the neck off, the stamp doesn't look like any MIM's that I've seen. Does anyone recognize this stamp? Looks like the serial reads 980624 not sure if there is more that was scraped off though. Just finish stripping the poly coat, looks like a 5 piece body, Anybody know the wood just by looking? Alder?

You've done a great job of leaving nothing to base a response on.

Was there no serial number on the headstock? Mexican serial numbers have the following format:

The neck was not the original. So it is irrelevant to identifying the body. What you see in the pictures is all I have to go on.

Every Fender I have ever seen sanded have had the top grain run parallel to the strings, no matter how much paint covered it.
This top does not look like ash, which rarely ever has straight grain, nor almost black grains.
It's hard to tell what the top wood is from the picture, but it could be birch, kiri, or boxwood.

My guess is that this is not a Fender body, and hails from somewhere where they use the YYMMDD format for dates (which the number 980624 matches), like China.

I agree with the above. Never seen a body stuck together vertically, let alone a Fender body.
