I'm replacing the pickups in my MIM Telecaster, the previous owner had installed a GFS Rail Humbucker for the Bridge, not sure what the neck pickup is but I think it's the original. I'm replacing with Fender Custom Shop Nocaster 51' pickups and I'm really confused about what wiring diagram to use. First of all, I don't know anything about resistors and capacitors and what their used for, (I'm to old to learn), I just want to know where to install or where not to install them and the correct one to use.The diagram that came with the pickups show a resistor installed and also a capacitor, the capacitor that was previously installed is in a different place than where the new diagram shows, and there was no resistor installed with the old pickups. When I was trying to locate the resistor, a tech person told me I didn't want to do that because the "tone" would be given a darker effect and my switch would be two position with the "tone" being all the way "dark" or nothing at all (I probably don't have this exactly right, they said something like that). Anyway, here's the result that I'm looking for with the new pickups, I want them to be the "best" they can be, the way they were "meant" to be. No extremes or anything exotic, just where they sound as good as they can and my 3 way switch works the way it was meant to work. I was thinking that the Fender wiring diagram that came with it would accomplish this until I started looking around, now I'm really confused. The pots that I have are 250K CTS. I have removed all the old wiring, because it looked nothing like what the new diagram showed, I wanted to start fresh with the new wiring. Any help will be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Why a second post about same subject ?

Forget your diagram , do this wiring a '60 telecaster with no resistor, only .05 or .047 mfd cap
I Forget to give you the link, look this page Right up side ; SUPPORT. Stringed instruments diagrams , look for 60 telecaster

Thanks stratele52, you answered my questions in the other thread about grounding perfectly. I did like you suggested and looked in support, stringed instruments, 60's tele, and found the diagram your talking about. I also looked at all the other tele models and none of them shows the resistor like the diagram showed that came with my new pickups. All the diagrams for all the teles are basically the same with minor changes in the capacitor location, so your right again, I'll just forget about that diagram and use the 60's one. Thanks again.

Well, I decided not to use any of the old stuff. So, I ordered a new shielding kit and new pots/switch kit last Friday. It will be here tomorrow and I can't wait to get this things done! Any tips including how to solder? This will be my first time! Pics will be on the way messy or not! Image

If you never solder before , don't start and learn with this mod , practice on electrical wire , scrap etc. You'll do a mess and could scrap some parts .

Most difficult is to solder on the back of each pot for ground.

I'm sure on You Tube you can find video " How to do electronic solder " ... or something like that

Don't use plumber solder ONLY ELECTRONIC SOLDER

And pratice, practice

Thanks stratele52, I've been checking out the youtube stuff as you suggested, and I'll be doing a lot of practicing as well. Your thoughts about the following, please; I've removed all the paint from the bottom of each pickup cavity as well as some of the wood. I want the shielding tape to make good contact to the wood and not come loose. And I also don't want the pickups to come in contact with the shielding tape so I lowered the bottom a little bit. I'm thinking about removing that wood in the control panel cavity that sticks up between the pot indentions, that would make that area more flat and the tape would apply a little easier and maybe keep the tape from coming in contact with something that it shouldn't. I bought a Weller soldering iron from Home Depot ($24 2nd one from bottom price and which tip is best to use , I've got three). I also got some .22 dia. 62/36/2 rosin core solder and some desoldering braid from Radio Shack. Thanks.

I use some copper shielding tape from Stew Mac and the black paint too which is more easy to use and look better but more expensive .

Copper shield tape stick easy on any place . Best is to drop a solder between to layer (?) of tape to be sure it have a good contact . Each piece of shielding cavity and tape must have electrical contact between them , with a wire if need.

http://www.stewmac.com/Shopping?actn=se ... ord=shield

In soldering , most difficult ting is to solder on the back of each pot . Try find old pot to practice .
Yellow steel pot may be difficult to solder , gray Fender type pot are "easy "

Easy way is to sand little bit a spot on the back of each pot and put a some solder before you solder the ground wire on.

Stratele52, Yeah, that's where I got my stuff from (stewmac). they have a kit for Tele shielding and a kit for the pots and switch ($58 for everything including shipping). The kits come with instructions as well. I didn't get any paint, do I need to?. The new pots are CTS 250K, just like the old ones, so maybe the soldering want be too bad, I have the old ones to practice on. There is an example on youtube that showed it in great detail, with the connecting wire and all. Thanks.

Well here's where I'm at right now. I've covered the insides, soldered the tape connections, and install the ground wires. I have a good connection all the way through, my continuity meter shows everything is connected and I get a reading everywhere. I'm wondering about a several things, is the top overlap too much and should it be in only a couple places? Was it the right thing to screw the ground wire into the guitar body? I have taped the bottom of the neck pickup cover but does the bridge pickup and control cover need to be taped on the bottom side or is the metal cover enough? I have two pics to attach, don't know how to do but one at a time, next one on the way in another reply.Image
