Hey there!

Long story short - I am planning on getting a Fender Blacktop Telecaster HH (alder body, maple fretboard) - here is a picture of it.
Image
But since I'm playing a lot of heavy music I am still in doubt. The questions are:

Can I play on it in Drop B tuning and would it sound different (in quality) than the original tuning?
Can I place 10-52 stings on it and will it handle it correctly?
Can I change the humbuckers to active ones (EMG 81,85 or other, silver looking ones), and does the pickguard have a free space to hide a battery there?

I really love how a classic telecaster looks (black body, yellow fretboard), so everything else just doesn't look beautiful to me (Jim Root series, baritone tele's, esp's and other guitars. Schecter has a PT Fastback model, which looks a lot like a telecaster, and is beautiful by the way, but the bridge pickup is smaller than a usual one so to change it to EMG I would have to cut a hole in the guitar, which is too risky for me).

I would be really happy if you could help me with this one, because I'm stuck.. Maybe someone has an experience of playing modern metal music an a tele?

Thank you in advance!

P.S. By the way for the past 4 years I've been playing on a PRS SE Paul Allender, which is also kind-of-not suitable for lower tuning, but I've been playing even lower than Drop B on it and it handled it good.

No, there's not enough room for a battery without modifying it.

.010 strings should be no problem on any Fender.

I know what you're talking about

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=92923

I can tell you right now even without the battery box, getting all the emg hardware into that guitar is a tough ask.

There are a couple of FSR about that come loaded with EMGs, but they're back routed with means they don't have that "classic" look you're after (control plate + pickguard).

theres currently a Fender FTM HH loaded with duncans available. There should be plenty of space in the back of those for all the EMG electronics and battery pack, but it aint very "classic" looking that all :(

Here's the guitar you're talking about:

The EMG 81 & 85 set doesn't support coil tap and split operation.

Yeah but for "modern metal" he's not really looking for the single coil tone I'd say.

@pavels.trebuhins

There's no alternative model as fas as I can tell - unless you choose the expensive Custom Shop route.

I own this guitar and it's friggin' AMAZING !!

Image

It's fast, sure and has a lot of Tonal possibilities.

Waaay above it's price point, Carved Mahogany Body, Mahogany Setneck w/ 22 frets, Bound Body/Neck + a pair of EMGs... all for under $400 !!

It (mine) has incredible Tone and I can't see why you couldn't play Metal w/ it... Remember, it's not the Wand... it's the Magician !!

Much more so than a 'standard' single-coil Tele anyway !!

Suspect these are going to be real sleepers down the road.

A Tele (of any kind) isn't going to be the HeadBanger's 1st choice anyway, but since it's yours, I think the FSR Custon HH is the best of the bunch for your stated purpose.

cheers!
