Anyone know why this Fender Telecaster features a reversed control panel?

Because it allows a player easier access to the volume control with their pinky. It is a common mod.

Are there other Tele models which come standard like this one?

The Fender Blacktops MIM come with it reversed. But they also put the "amp style" nobs on it. And I don't know if anyone with slightly sweaty hands has ever tried to perform a volume swell with one of those knobs, but its pretty much near impossible mid song.

I prefer the pickup selector in that position myself but I can understand why the mod is done.

Fender did this a 3 pickup Nashville style Telecaster in the '90s. I owned one, but it was a little wierd to me.

@paris The guitar you're talking about was a pre-2003 Custom Classic Telecaster. It came with two Texas Special Strat single-coils and a Texas Tele bridge pickup. In 2003 Fender reverted the Custom Classic Telecaster to a conventional 2-pickup layout with a Nocaster in the bridge and a Twisted in the neck.

Thanks for the info. I'm not really up on Teles. The guitar had a rosewood fret board, black body and period pickguard. The neck and middle pickup were like Strat pickups. I can't remember what they bridge pickup looked like. I'm guessing the normal tele type.

I just couldn't get into the guitar. I ended up Trading it and a MIM Strat for the down payment on a Candy Green Clapton Strat I ordered.

Good trade. That Clapton Strat is really wonderful.

I still play Teles. My main Tele is a copy of an Andy Summers Tele I built from parts. Look left.

You guess right, it's a 1st generation Custom Classic Telecaster from the 1995-2003 era. You've two Texas Special Strat singles in the middle & neck and a Texas Special Tele pickup in the bridge.

In 2003 Fender updated this model with a Nocaster in the bridge and a Twisted in the neck. The middle pickup was deleted and a standard 3-way selector replaced the Strat-O-Tele 5-way switch.

Though officially discontinued in 2009, Custom Classics are still available at customer's request.

(Guitar is not mine)

Purchased the Tele I asked about above. It is a wonderful guitar. The intonation was right on. Great feel.

Congratulations. It is a nice one. I reverse the controls because I always hit the pickup selector. Plus it is handier to have the volume first. Have fun. :D
