Since my last post about "String size problem" I've been looking for a Fender Telecaster and I've finally got one. The one I've got is MIM, Lake Placid Blue, and it came with a Gator Hardshell case. It looked really good on the first inspection when I bought it and today I'm really checking it out.

Couple questions I have:

1. The serial number is MZ9498208, the guitar dater project says "No Information" I've always had success with this site so I'm a little worried about it. The Fender site doesn't do individual number but it says it's a Mexican 2009-2010 model.

2. Inside the pick guard there is a bar code with MO2141119 on it. What does this mean, should this number match the serial number and has the neck been changed out?

3. I'm planning on doing some "pedal steel guitar licks", and this requires some pretty serious string bending, I really like flat wounds and I'm planning on using D'addario ECG23 (they don't make a ECG22 which would be lighter) which is still kinda heavy. Any suggestion?

4. The previous owner said he had changed out the volume and tone pots, I don't remember the brand. Also the bridge pickup has been changed to GLS Rails or something like that, any thoughts about the impact this will have, good or bad?

The guy was kind enough to take $250 for it, and I really appreciated that, I was running short and couldn't do anymore.

My other stuff: Fender Mustang III
Fender JazzMaster Deluxe Series
Ampeg BA115

Hey mate,

Couple of things: Danny gatton and arlen Roth are/were both big Tele players who incorporated pedal steel licks in there playing. Both have used rail-style pickups in their teles. So no probs there.

Round wound strings generally are harder to bend and are a little "less bright" than round wound strings. This might go against your pedal lick approach but 10-46 is still a pretty light gauge. The main problem is that g string is wound on you set. A lot of pedal steel licks use the g string bend due to the Maj 3rd relation in open and the fact you can bend the 5th of the d shape up to a min,Maj 6th. You might find it easier to swap out the g string for a non- wound string.

As for the guitar, the guy u bought it off may have swapped the neck if he swapped pickups. But if it plays well and says fender, for 250 who cares?

Pics would help :) enjoy playing her, lpb is a great colour :)

Thanks Impulse7,

I put a set of D'addario EXL120+ on today, I ordered the ECG23's earlier today and they won't be here until Friday or Monday, I couldn't wait that long to try it out. The EXL120+ are 9.5 to 44 with the third string being solid and not wound and it's a 16. I'm real happy with these and I will probably use the other ones on my friends guitar. I'm gonna order some more of the EXL120+. As you pointed out the flats are not as bright and advertised as "mellow" and harder to bend, I had forgotten about that, so thanks for that.

I removed the neck (just checking everything) and it has one of those bar codes with a number under it, it's similar to the one under the pick guard so maybe these are part number codes or something.

I found out a little more about the bridge pickup, the guy hadn't deleted the craigslist ad and he said it was a GFS Rail Humbucker in the ad. The new GFS pickups aren't like the one I have, I'm pretty sure mine is an older version, I did find a picture of the one I have when I binged it. They run about $40 so I probably shouldn't expect too much. I was checking out the Fender Nocaster 51's and they were highly reviewed, they're $160, I'll need to do some more research before I make that jump.

Anyway I've got it all cleaned and setup and it's playing really well, major work was on the intonation and bridge radius, they were a real mess. No wonder the guy sold it. It sounds really good through my Mustang III, I like preset 14 with Sine Chorus, plus I have a volume pedal.

I'd like to add some pics but I just can't figure out how to do it.

All good :)

If you're talking about the standard stickers they stick on these MIMs you're probably fine: heres my blacktop tele taken apart and a photo of the stickers:

They don't have to match :)

To post pics, upload the photos to a website somewhere (flickr, google photos, photobucket, something like that). Make sure the photo is public and get the public url of the uploaded photo (most easily done by right-clicking -> Copy Image Url) and then when you're making a post on this site, click the Img button at the top of the "post a reply" section. It'll look like this in the body of the post

Code:
[img][/img]

and then you wanna paste your image url between the [img] blocks like so

Code:
[img]http://photobucket.com/yourimage.jpg[/img]

And it'll come out like my photos did above.

Enjoy :)

You did the right thing to get the url! Nearly there. You need to put [IMG] blocks around the URL in your post. There is an IMG button on the top of the post window. Near the bold, italic, underscore, quote etc. Click on the IMG button and it will put two blocks inside your post. Paste the URL between then and you're good to go!

ok here goes, these pics about the wiring problem in the other thread, when I get the new pickups in I'll show the whole guitar, it's a beauty!

well when I hit the img button the doohickey goes to the middle of the img, like you said, but when I hit paste it goes to the right and post it outside of the img. what now? oops!! I posted and then took a look, my whole account showed up with all my info, I'm in edit now and took it out! I'll go back to google photo and look around, I need to find how to post just the pictures and not the whole account.

The URL of just the picture itself won't be displayed in your address bar. Click on the picture so it displays the biggest version of the PIC (not the thumbnail version) then right click on the image itself, it will bring up the right click menu right next to the mouse pointer. You want to select "copy image URL" from this menu. This will close the menu and copy the correct URL to your clipboard. Try pasting it into the address bar of your browser and press enter. The image and only the image should be displayed. That's how you know you have the right URL without coming back to the fender forums each time

Ok Impicker2,

To make sure you have the right url, bring your image up on a website so you can see the image as you would like it to appear on this forum, heres a big picture of one I uploaded to google photos:

Image

Take your mouse and hover over the picture, then right click the image. I've done this in Internet Explorer below, so the menu options will be different if you're using chrome or firefox. Below I've highlighted "Copy" in that menu item. In chrome it's "Copy Image Url", but they do the same thing which is copy the URL of that image to your clip board.

Image

This final shot is me pasting into the address bar of internet explorer, when I click go or press enter, it will display the image by itself, without any of the google surrounding it. That looks like this:

Image

That URL is the one you want to paste into the image tags, so in your post it would look like this

Code:
[img]https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-SMsLiKkvjcE/U180qhLuY9I/AAAAAAAABnk/pgWOKxkngWY/w985-h614-no/pic3.png[/img]

I hope that helps you.

Dan
