I have a American Vintage 69 Thinline Tele. She has a maple neck and fretboard. The maple is sealed with some sort of finish. I think the paint is "gloss lacquer" but I'm not sure...anyone know?

Currently I spray Dunlop 65 and clean everything with it. Is this safe to put on the neck, fingerboard, and body?

If not, what would you recommend? I want to make sure I am not doing any harm to my baby.

Dunlop 65 is a whole series of products. Some are safe for Nitro finishes, most are not.

No, Dunlop stuff is not universally safe for nitro. Here's what Dunlop themselves replied to a customer about the Dunlop 65 cleaner:

Quote:
Thanks for the email. Yes, there are trace amounts of silicone, silicone poses no threat to the finish unless you have a nitro-cellulose or vintage instrument. Formula 65 polish is generally OK for a nitro finish. I would not use it if there are cracks, checking, or dings in the finish. I also would not use it if it is an old and thin finish.

The Dunlop 65 lemon oil is death to nitro, by the way, like all petroleum oils. If you use it on a rosewood or ebony fretboard, make sure you do not get any on the guitar or neck.

OK so how does this apply to my question in the thread? will the 65 be OK on my American Vintage 69 Thinline Tele? Is lacquer the same as nitro? Fender description says the finish is lacquer...

The AVRIs have nitro finishes. The fretboad has a gloss urethane finish, which is somewhat sturdier.
In any case, I would not use a polish that doesn't specifically state that it's safe for nitro finishes.
If you go with the Fender Custom Shop branded cleaning/polishing package, you should be safe. It's cheap enough.

What is the neck finished with? (not the fretboard) I usually only use the Dunlop 65 on the back of the neck to wipe down after my sweaty palms. Is the Dunlop 65 safe to use on the neck?

I rarely put the Dunlop 65 on the body because my guitar is white and always looks clean...but I have used it on the body, any chance it did any unseen damage to the finish I should be concerned about? is it going to eat my guitar lol?

It doesn't matter much - your hands sliding up and down is going to do far more damage to the back of the neck than what cleaners will.

If it's Dunlop 65 Polish, it's likely just fine.
If it's Dunlop 65 Cleaner, there's more of a risk, but unless you let it sit like if it were a polish before wiping it dry, you're probably fine too.

A carnuba wax based finishing polish will protect the finish from both sweat, scratches and cleaners.
The nitro paint that Fender uses is similar to what was on cars in the 1950s, so you can safely use a vintage car wax, or get a guitar wax made for nitro finishes, like the Fender Custom Shop branded one.
It's a small bottle, but should last years.

I lost my bottle of 65 and the guys at Wildwood Guitars told me they use Gibson pump polish on all of their guitars including the AVRI's.

I picked up a bottle and cleaned up my Tele last night...this stuff rocks. I notice a substantial difference over the Dunlop 65. The Gibson pump leaves my Tele smoother than it was when it was new. The bottle says safe for nitro so I am trusting that it is safe. Anyone use this stuff before?

Yep. It works great. It doesn't clean (and thus isn't abrasive), so you might want to go over with a damp chamois or microfiber cloth first to get fingerprints and dust off, and then use the pump polish.
All the Gibson stuff is pretty good, but overpriced. But then again, when a small bottle lasts years, it doesn't really matter if you pay $7 for $4 worth.
Gibson also has a chrome-safe metal polish that works wonders. I had some tuner knobs that were getting kind of bad looking, but two minutes with that stuff made them shiny like new.

The pump polish doesn't clean? To me it seems like it took care of everything...it seems it would be cleaning and polishing depending on how you look at what it's doing. But I think it's doing both at the same time, right?

Is Gibson Pump Polish safe on the fingerboard of my AVRI? Since the fingerboard a are sealed, is anything safe?

Edit* - the bottle says "no other polish can clean and protect your instruments finish as well..." I'm pretty sure it is a cleaner/polish.
