Hello there everyone

I'm looking to buy my first telecaster guitar!
I've been looking online for used guitars and came across a 95 fender telecaster standard (Mexico Made)
The guitar looks neat and clean
The gentlemen selling it, is asking for 500$ .
Also the guitar is fitted with custom shop 51' nocastor pickups
Is this a good deal on a beautiful looking guitar?

I'm still learning and understanding the pickups that you can put on guitars
Figured this is the right place for help
Thank you all

I wouldn't get too caught up in the specs, especially for your first Telecaster.

Get out and play it... if you like it, buy it.

$500 seems a little steep for a '95, but that's his asking price. Offer $400 (or check eBay for recent completed sales to see what the market thinks - you can use this as leverage too), then meet somewhere in the middle.

I have a '99 MIM which was modded before I got it. The mods consisted of removing the middle pup (it was originally a Nashville Deluxe), replacing the switch and PG. It's really only worth $300-$400.

Even though it was given to me, it's an excellent guitar that I'll likely never sell.

I have 3 Telecasters and the other two are 'better' in terms of their features, pickups, CoO, etc. They too are excellent guitars.

But everytime I pick up that old MIM it's just like slipping on a favorite old, worn, comfortable pair of shoes.

Guitars come and go. If you tire of this one or later want features it lacks, you can always sell it and move on to something else.

The one thing the World isn't short of is used Telecaster guitars !

Good Luck !

cheers!

It is not a deal , you pay 'higher price" for a Nocaster pickups. Did the seller can prove it ?

Check if frets are in good shape . 1995 could have millage .

I agree with Lightnin MN, don't get caught up in the specs. If your budget is $500 then you have a lot to choose from. You could go around to music shops and play many new mexi tele's until you find the one you want. There are many variations around that $500 mark.
Check the websites of Musicians Friend, Sweetwater, and Guitar Center to get an idea.

Keep in mind that modding a guitar will almost always lower the value, even if it's modded to better components. I think $500 is too much, as it's not a vintage collectible, and you can get one year old MIM Telecasters for that price.

Also be sure you check the fretboard. Loosen and move the strings aside, and look for fret grooves, as well as grooves worn in the wood. The former can be fixed by having a luthier filing down the frets (unless too deep, or done already), but the latter isn't fixable without replacing the entire fretboard or neck.

Look at Guitar Center's used gear section...

Mainwebsite>>Used Gear>>All Used Gear>> Enter Telecaster and your price range... You'll find many Telecasters, including Road Worns, USA Made Highway 1's, USA Specials, and if you're lucky USA Standards at $500.

$500 for a used MIM is not worth it, many people assume that "upgrades" are 100% recoupable when reselling. That's not the case... Brand new guitars are worth more than used, no matter how little if any wear is on the used guitar. Upgrades are no different.
