Hi all, I just bought a 52 reissue Tele and find after playing it for a while the neck fells gummy and slow. Does it have anything to do with the lacquer they use on this model?
Will it go away with time? I wipe the neck down with a cloth each time after playing.

Thanks

Neil

Yes, it is the lacquer. I sanded the back of my neck with 400 grit paper, just enough to take the shine off, then polished it with guitar polish. Nice and slick now.

Here's how I do it:
Take 1600/2000 grit wet/dry paper, soak it in water and sand the neck - surprisingly few strokes is enough.

Bluesky, #400 paper sounds too coarse for my liking. At 1600/2000 grit I've had no need for polishing afterwards.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I could start with finest git and see what that does and go courser if needed.

just take some automobile rubbing compound to it, like a DuPont No. 7. No sanding necessary

Not to me. Gives me the feel I prefer.

If was me, and the tele is under 30 days old, I would take it to the closest Fender warranty shop, and let Fender deal with the problem. If over call them to see what they will do for you. I just had a fret sprout problem fixed at Fenders cost on my new -Am Del Strat. Ed

Actually, there is nothing that a warranty would cover here - in normal cases the 'stickiness' is a feature of some finishes, not a defect. Some find it makes playing more difficult, some don't notice a difference - all comes down to playing styles.

Thanks for all the replies. I think it is an individual finish issue as well, had an 81 Les Paul Deluxe with the same issue. I now have a 05 SG and the neck is fine, my Strat neck is fine.

Just wondering though do you do anything with the fret board?

Sounds like the neck lacquer is nitrocellulose, so the sticky feeling is normal until it's fully cured (it can take a while).
I've not found a sticky neck since Fender started using urethane finishes as standard, and that includes gloss finished ones.

There's a midway point between sticky and slick that many (including yours truly) prefer. Your thumb won't slide on it, but it won't stick on it either. Satin finish, unlike the super-slick Mexican necks you need gecko hands to play.
My ideal is when the neck feels like untreated wood - neither slick nor sticky.

That's a common theme with Nitro necks... Scrub your hands before playing too. The stickiness may be your own skin comining off when playing too.

A tiny bit of talc on your hands won't hurt. Just wipe the excess off with a towel, so you don't leave white marks on a rosewood fingerboard :)
