I bought my first guitar in 1987. It was a brand new 1986 Made in Japan 1962 Telecaster. It had a 3-tone burst, threaded rod saddles and a serial number on the bridge plate. I sold it in 1992 or so and always regretted it.

Today I walked into my local store and saw it. (Not mine of course, but a similar model).

It played great!!! So I am hesitant to remove the neck.
Here is my question.

Did any of the A serial 62 customs have Made in Japan (not crafted), a three piece body, an A serial # that were mid 90s guitars? I though I saw that the A serial #s appeared in 1985-7 AND 1995 or so.

Thanks so

I am typing this into my phoneby talking so please forgive any typos or grammatical errors. I did look at the page that he has up and here is my concern? It appears that he says that if you have an a serial number that it could be from mid 80's or mid 90's, but the way that he's worded it I don't know if that means that there were a serial number mid 90's that had made in Japan or if his paragraph minutes means that you can have an a serial number for both mid 80's and the 90 S series, but that the mid 80's will say made in Japan, and the mid-90s will say crafted in Japan. So essentially, I am trying to determine whether or not made in Japan was used with an a serial number for the run that occurred in the later 90s. Thanks again folks

I had that very model with the 3-Tone Sunburst, really liked that guitar, and kind of regret letting it go. It had good tele tone and was a very well built guitar and had a nice slab rosewood fretboard!

They are keepers for sure! Enjoy that puppy.

I have an early 80's Japanese 62 custom tele, it's my number 1 guitar. Original owner was my dad's mate who I got it off, he got it for his 18th birthday back in the 80's when living in Germany, brand new.

A serial number, made in Japan on neck heel, 3 piece body. I love it

Hey. Does your neckplate have FENDER stamped in it? Or is it blank.
Thanks
Tim

yes it says fender on the neckplate, just a basic stamp though not script like they are now.

30 years have been quite kind to it, it was never used much until i got it about 10 years ago, funnily enough as my own 18th birthday present. there are a few chips and dings, and the binding has aged to a beautiful creamy colour but nothing Fender wouldnt charge you extra for  its very 'Closet Classic'.

i love it, all original apart from the nut which i broke fitting .13's to it.

Yep that is the real deal. The "A" serial number stamped on the bridge plate with a small "Made in Japan" at the base of the neck was how they did it back then. Enjoy she is a beautiful guitar!

Ok. I pulled the pickguard and control plate and she seems all original. How's it look to you MIJ owners? Is that the correct 3 position switch? Did I over pay at $650 and tax? (Doesn't matter, it was my first guitar, the nostalgia added $200 to my budget the minute I saw her)

Here she is:

Everything on that guitar appears to be completely original. The switch is 100% correct. Notice how clean the cavities are on these. Some very fine work by Fuji-Gen.

So I decided to take off the neck and got a surprise. Neck pocket says TLC-62B in black ink and there is a red ink K nearby and a red ink S inside a circle. The heel of the neck says TLC-62B and has a red ink K as well. The neck is penciled 9-20-86. So it is almost exactly the guitar I sold off in 92. So very happy and I am convinced it is 100% stock at this point.

Also can confirm that some late 1986 models had the plastic enclosed switch and allen key saddle height adjusters. I have a non staggered pole bridge Pickup too.

Only thing left to do now after all that investigating is to play it like you stole it!

I think it may be possible yours has had new tuners?

They are very shiny compared to mine, bearing in mind mine are very dull despite not being used that much. I would expect 30 year old chrome/nickel to look like it does on my tuners.

Also may be an optical illusion but yours look 'rounder' than mine.
