Hey there!

I decided on a Telecaster, for which Fender I should buy

however.....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Telecaster

I'm not sure which model/variant to choose, though.

Basically, i'm going to play indie/alternative rock, along with some blues and even some country here and there. Though, predominately alternative/indie. The blues/country bit will be on the side.

I should note that I plan on buying this Gibson:

http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electri ... tudio.aspx

So, I'm not too keen on buying a more aggressive guitar tone, you know.

But yeah, I've also heard that finding a more 'alternative rock/indie rock' sound lies within the gear, not the guitar.

So with that being said, which telecaster should I buy bros?

You don't give us much to chew on - like your estimated price range for starters...

Anyway, and IMHO, you just can't go wrong with the basic two singlecoil Tele construction - it's been used in every music style through its history, and the sound possibilities are endless (with that Tele character, of course).

And then it comes down to your personal preferences (rosewood/maple fretboard, neck radius, painted or natural etc. etc.) - only you can answer those questions.
Sit down and think, then go and play a couple guitars, buy the one that says take me home.

BTW, the sound comes from the player, not the guitar or the gear.

Buy a MIM Standard for a good start then take a look in the Internet for a pickup suiting better your playing style.

For indie rock I'd recommend Lollars or GFS Hot Punchers.

Good luck!

At that budget you have lots to choose from. If country will be part of your repertoire, a tele with the standard pickup arrangement should be what you're after.

Other than that, the 2 pickup telecaster has been used in every type of music you've mentioned with huge success.

Is there anything you particularly like the look of? Your requirements can be met by a lot of different telecasters, so maybe start considering what you like the look of most?

Can you get to a shop to play any and try them?

An American std is the daddy, and depending where you live will leave a chunk of cash in your pocket for the other guitar or for a better amp, or some pedals etc.

What amp do you have? A cheap amp will make the best guitar in the world sound rubbish. A good amp will make a cheap guitar punch above its weight.

^^^I agree 100%!
Don't look at the price tag, and try this one! Amazing tone and 'playability'.===> http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TeleCV50BB/
I've never seen such consistently positive (even rave) written and video reviews.
Just one to listen to===> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h75TyVoHiZ0

Any. Most of the sound is from the player, not the gear. $$ won't buy you chops. The Tele variants will make very little difference one way or the other.

A good amp helps. I plugged a $200 Affinity into a Blues Deluxe the other day and it sounded great.

True, but buying a guitar you like means you'll play more, which builds chops.

Price doesn't have to be what makes you love it, though. My two favourite guitars (out of six) are a $2k Tele and a $450 Gibson SGJ. Both of them have the "play me" factor. It's great if you find it at low cost, but it's also worth paying for.

Whatever models tweak Fender throw at them, they're still Teles. People buy them because of that.

ALRIGHT BROS

It'll be a pick between the Custom and American Special

My only worry is that since the Les Paul that I intend on buying will of course come with humbuckers, the Custom will be redundant, you know. Therefore I'm perhaps leaning towards the American Special

Custom: http://www.fender.com/series/classic/cl ... ard-black/

American Standard: http://www.fender.com/series/americ...c ... -sunburst/

I'll likely find some Ebay options later on

Anyway what do you think bros, would the humbucker on the Fender Custom make an insane difference?

what it comes down to is feel , go to the shop and try a few , maple or rosewood ? single or twin ?
I have a mexican standard with maple neck but a seymore Duncan broadcaster pick up at the bridge and it sounds great .
That said it´s my guitar not your´s so pick some up and try them , you´ll soon know what´s right for you .

Just like with someone you date, small differences may be all it takes to turn ok into like, or like into love. The difference in the guitar (or person) doesn't have to be big; you supply the difference in your mind and heart.
So yes, getting a guitar you feel for is important. One Tele may have the je ne sais quoi, and another won't. Get the right one for you, and you will play more, and build more chops.

If you pick guitars (or partners) based on specs and value, it is unlikely to become more than a mediocre relationship.

Don't buy any guitar, Telecaster or otherwise, based on specification/reviews.

Go into a shop and play them. Find the one that feels/sounds right for you. Buy the exact one you played, not another one like it that you didn't play.

If you're not a confident enough player to make that assessment yourself, then take a friend with you who's a better guitar player, or find a shop with an assistant you like/trust to help you with demos.

From the specs, I thought I wanted an American Deluxe Telecaster. When I played some in the shop, I preferred the Standard, based on playability for me and the sound I got from it.

My opinion is that although you may get something cheaper online / mail-order, you're losing a lot by not trialling it (and a few others for comparison).

I love this comparison. Very wise words. :)
