Hey, guys.

I recently bought a Used MIM '69 Thinline Reissue online. Now that I got it I think I got duped. The guitar looks good, but the serial decal looks sketchy. It seems like it was a sticker as the borders are still visible... The font matches my other Fenders, although the last digits are what worry me. Any help is appreciated

More picture of body could help too,

And Fender " F " tuners are standard on this Mexican made guitar ?

IMO with " F " tuners , the peg head must have "bullet " style truss rod !

They print the serial number decals in two passes. First they print the "MN8", because that stays the same for the whole run of that year's decals (on the first past they also print the words "serial number" and "Made In Mexico"). Then they run it through again -- the serial number part is added by 6 rotating wheels side-by-side, each wheel has the numbers 0~9 on them. When the last wheel rotates past 9 it has a cog that trips the wheel next to it, so on and so forth.

It's a standard common printing process to print the non-changing parts and sequential parts separately. But the two sections almost never line up perfectly.

It's kind of unusual to have the decal look raised like that. When new, the finish on top of the decal is usually so thick that the surface is smooth. But after 15~16 years the finish has shrunk around the decal a little so the surface isn't perfectly smooth.

It's a '69 Reissue. "F" tuners were introduced in the '60s, the bullet truss rod wasn't introduced until '72. So a '69RI should have a heel-adjust rod, not a bullet at the head.

(If it was an exact reissue it would have heel adjust with a maple cap board, no skunk stripe, and no solid walnut plug on the head. But the Classic Series aren't meant to be exact reissues. So they used a one piece maple neck with skunk stripe and walnut plug -- but a bullet wouldn't even be close to correct for a '69.)

In terms of the specs on the guitar, they are right on the website.

http://www.fender.com/en-CA/guitars/tel ... -sunburst/

The serial number looks about right in terms of printing, although it does seem to look like there was some sloppy finnishing because it almost looks like a piece of of tape that has been applied.

My gut says it is fine, just not a perfect finish.

Regardless of the type of font or printing pattern.

Should the serial number be on the front of the headstock on a guitar with that age of serial number!!!!!!

No - on a real '69 Tele the serial number would have still been stamped on the neck plate; serial numbers didn't move to the headstock until 1976. Since this is one of the MIM Classic models they use modern serial number decals on the back of the headstock. The short-lived American Vintage '69 Tele Thinline (made from early 2011 through August 2012) did have the serial number on the neck plate.

Just shoot an e-mail with your serial number to consumerrelations@fender.com They will tell you if it is fake or not, and probably tell you all the specs to boot. The guitar looks correct to me.

hi there!
The serial number does track back to a 69 Tele Thinline in Natural Fender Part number 013-6902-321 completed 5/28/1999.

All the best,
rob
