No SPC for this tele Chrome, sorry to say.

There's no reason to apologize, the Jim Root Telecaster doesn't sport any tone control, just a master volume pot and a 3-way selector to make things simple.

Ha! I fail to browse the Tele forum often enough and have been missing this thread. Slap on the wrist, Ceri.

Loving what I'm seeing! Especially the battery box - I get the visual neatness of putting batteries under pickguards, but for all us mere mortals who don't have full-time roadies (sorry - "guitar technicians"...) to offload the task on that method makes battery changes very tiresome indeed. Battery boxes for active pickups are compulsory, far as I'm concerned. Way to go, Impulse.

I really like my active EMG single-coils, so I'm going to be very interested to see how you get on with these fatties. Sooner or later, Impulse, we must get you, me and Forum user The Nutter together over a beer or two. That gentleman can shriek "metaaaaaaaaaaal!!!" in a voice that makes banshees run for cover.

Meantime: the spot of sand-through on the horn. Kudos. It just wouldn't be a proper build thread without it. 8)

My neighbour's kid was recently building a kit guitar which we ended up doing together. We used black car paint and put on a full two aerosols of it with special attention to the edges, and when it came to finish-sanding he still went through in several places. He was very patient but it became a bit frustrating for him so without him knowing I got a third tin and put it all on. That did the trick. The great thing about car paint is that if you run out you can always get some more in the same matching shade. Especially black.

Anyway. Keep up the good work. Itching to see a photo of that Tele side by side with its stablemate... :D

Cheers - C

Ohhh ceri these are "splittable" EMG "fatties" as you put it :) So I'd done my research (or so I thought) and I was told that they actually have an extra coil in there for the single coil. What I thought this meant was a hot wound single coil that received the same power output when the "push pull" was activated. When I got the instructions I was interested (and a little excited) to find out that its slightly different. They stack a coil behind one of the humbucker pickups, so effectively you're getting a humbucker or a stacked single in a 2 coil space.

Heres a diagram explaining :)

Tip: put a set of Schaller staggered lockers and straplocks to complete the look.

In your place I would opt for a passive setup and stick a pair of Lace Drop & Gains in both neck & middle positions.

For the most adventurous guitarists who take the risk to burn their fingers while chording and bending hard Lace offers their Finger Burner humbucking pickups. These high-output fire bombs pack a serious midrange gut punch. The ample crunch tone is best described as vintage low-end growl and grit with modernly defined mids. Highs are appropriately face-removing with touch sensitive dynamics and brilliant harmonics. The peak freq sits at 2540 hertz, which translates to a heavy rock sweet spot-a tonal boon to tube amp/brown sound monks. The neck pup has a thick-as-lava low-end, riff-raging mids and highs with dynamics that increase like screams of the damned as you go up the neck!

U know, sometimeS, I wonder If you are a team of people using the same account trawling this forum, posting on every thread prompting users to buy every third party property under the sun, but not reading the thread beforehand to make sure one your team hasn't already recommended a different product. Also one of your team is an awesome and extremely knowledgable Eric Clapton fan.

Its either that or the booze they sell in Athens is top shelf ;)

No, I've reported JohnDerp as a troll to them. He's banned now for a while.

On the other side - I partially agree with him (and many other forumites), modifying a guitar or bass without having the basic knowledge could hurt its value. But if the job is done by an expert luthier the result is a great-sounding instrument bringing to his happy owner many hours of pleasure!

Progress update. Cutting compound out and polishing began:

Its an extremely overcast day so its a great indication I'm getting a good reflection (even better than that of the gloss plastic pickguard)

All the benefits of the Jim Root signature model with a more traditional look and further knockout tonal options! :P

This guitar would look much better with an all black hardware and matching plastic parts to contrast the matte black pickguard and dark rosewood fingerboard.

I just got to jump in here and say WOW! I've been watching this come along and it's really looking great! All the tech talk is way over my head and the pro approach is amazing! Won't be long now! The gold hardware is amazing with those colors, gives it the "high dollar look", King Tut kinda stuff, Wow!

Them's the kinda sisters I would like to meet.

I must say I like the Jim Root approach - modern hardware, but pared down to what's needed, no frills. The Jim Root Jazzmaster is everything a Jazzmaster isn't, and I like it!

Now what surprises me is that there isn't a Jim Root Esquire. The reason for buying an Esquire should be simplicity.
Make a single humbucker black or red Esquire with all modern hardware but without a three ways witch and tone control, and I'm sold.

Boys and girls. Nearly completed, no pics at the moment yet. Unfortunately I'm taking a 2 week hiatus and this mod will need to wait till I get back. 2 weeks from this weekend we should be piecing it all together. Thanks for sticking around we'll have a finished product shortly.

Ahhh Impicker2, and I'd have gotten away with it if too it wasn't for you kids! :)

I came back from work, got stuck back into the sanding went through the finish back down to the grey undercoat :( NOOO I WAS NEARLY DONE!!!. I realised this happened in a number of spots and that my finish applied was just too thin. So I have gone back and put another set of coats on in black lacquer. But that means another 2 weeks of waiting to dry.

I've done the painting again but the drying is taking longer because its now raining like cats and dogs in the usually sunny Perth, Western Australia.

So I will start sanding again.... next week? it should be set by then, plenty of paint on there now, so we should be fine in the sanding process this time round. Sorry for the wait :)
