Less metal? Well, here's the catch!

Since the 'buckers you've had ordered are splittable, your baby will also be capable to produce sparkling clean single-coil tones with a flick of a switch!

Best of both worlds.

You can drop an EMG SA single-coil in the middle and make an HSH configuration later.

With this layout you can get a nice Strat quack in positions 2 & 4.

Oh, and I guess the pickups come with a pull-out pot in the master tone control to toggle the SPC circuit! :P

Position 4 on a start is one of my fav tones, chrome. But for this mod I think I'll keep it as a rockin Tele and leave the stra quack to the strat.

Taking some pics of the hardware as we speak so will upload soon

Ok so heres a pic of the body (unsanded) and then the hardware approximately placed on the body. I might need to get an entire black pickguard.... I dont know? What do you think?

Judging the pics the control plate will house the master volume & tone (with push-pull SPC) and a 4-megapole 5-way selector for humbucking and single-coil tones.

The "quack" can be obtained by cutting the inner and outer coils from the humbuckers. That middle Strat pickup is optional.

Keep the stock HH config for now, you can make the HSH conversion later.

With the middle SC and the coils from the humbuckers splitted you'll no longer need to switch instruments between the songs.

So, got the pickups today and I was finally able to check some stuff out that was worrying me

1) The pickups fit in the pickup holes BUT the pickup height adjusting screws do not. Thats ok because its 1, 1.5cms off so a quick hack saw job on those guys and everthing will fit flush

2) The pots and switch fit in the cavity, with about 1.5cm clearance below the bottom of the pot for cables to be run, more than enough.

3) Unfortunately the holes from the pickup cavities to the main cavity need to be widened. I'm glad I waited on sanding the finish back until this point. So tomorrow night I'll get busy with a drill and maybe a chisel ( ) and then onto sanding.

Heres a pick with everything inplace: once that body is glossy this thing will look sweeeet :)

Ok so tonights progress from a couple of nights ago hurdles

Issue from point 1) Pickup screw adjustments to long

Out comes the hack saw and hacky hack

Image

and now everything sits flush in the pickup cavities

Image

Issue from point 2) Holes leading from pickup cavity into control cavity are too small for emg fittings. Out comes the drill and time to widen said holes

Neck pickup hole:
Image

Bridge pickup hole:

Image

(obligatory foot shot in there for Arth1 :P #nocrop)

So now the pickup wires fit through:

Image

I did manage to touch the edge of neck control channel with the drill and took some of the paint off:

Image

Meh: its under a pickguard and aint going to hurt no one, not worried about it :)

So, now that all of the tough stuff is out of the way its sand and polish time, which means not too many updates for the rest of the week. heres the first nights effort, from this:

Image

to this:

Image

riveting stuff that :P Onto 1500 grit sand paper, this one is taking its time and I might need to buy a new sheet of the stuff tomorrow. Anyway, thats it for a while until the sandings done and I'll post a completed shot of the body.

Cheers chrome :) I will definitely post a video with some sound clips once I'm done. Thinking of a bit of a riff/solo medley, any requests?

Also I'm glad some of you guys (chrome especially) are enjoying this thread so far :), plenty more to go after the sanding... fitting all those wires in the tele control cavity will be.... challenging :)

Yes, why not? Start with some tasty country chops and a wailing blues shuffle before pushing out the SPC for a solid Jim Root-inspired solo!

Looks like its a night of bad news

Bad news number 1) No SPC for this tele Chrome, sorry to say. I'm going 2 volume pots for the first round. Reason is I never use the tone control as it is, I KNOW I SHOULD!!! but I dont. I do however use the volume control to clean up or dirty up a tone. Given that I will have the ability to fatten up the tone by switching between the single coil and humbucker, I've decided to go with the dual volumes. Also so I can get some HH, HS, SH and SS configs as well as being able to shut off the front pickup and do some killswitch like effects with the pickup selector.

Bad news number 2) been sanding like a machine, and got all the way up to 2000 grit and then this happened:

Image

and this

Image

I was sooooo close to the automotive cut and polish!!!. Ahhh well, $@!& happens, I have touched it back up with more paint, gonna let it dry again and get those parts back to 2000 grit then we can finish this mod.
