I have a 2002 Mexican George Harrison Rose wood Telecaster Repo, that only 1,000 were made.
It seems that every year it is getting discoloration under the clear coat worse. Does anyone out there have or know of one or what it can be. It is stored in a fender case under my bed next to my 63 Gretch and that is fine. Trying to down load pics but having a hard time. :(

Just part of having a copy instead of an original, I guess.

I would think it was the clearcoat changing colour instead of the wood itself.

There is no way to get an original, (1) was made for George Harrison. They only made 1,000 of these and they listed for $1,000.00

OUCH !!!!

That looks suspiciously like a moisture issue.

Is the finish Nitro or Poly?

Where are you located? What's the avg. humidity in your area?

Do you clean the guitar w/ a water-based cleaner?

Do you sweat a lot when you play?

I ask because the Neckplate seems to be affected as well.

It ain't coming back from that... but perhaps you can apply a good paste wax to prevent it going any further.

Also, I'd contact Fender Customer Support and see if they'll help.

Shame really... Nice Guitar !

cheers!

The finish is de-laminating (separating from the wood). Rosewood is an oily/waxy wood and sometimes finishes don't stick to it very well.

Fender had a similar problem with maple neck finishes in the mid '90s -- the poly would de-laminate over the black plastic inlay dots, and they'd turn milky/gray looking. With those, you could use a syringe to inject superglue into the de-laminated area and then press the poly back down. But that probably wouldn't work on the very large problem areas on your body.

It may be a warranty issue -- can't hurt to check.

The only real cure is to strip the finish and try again.

I I spoke to 2 fender reps. today. The First told me the guitar was shipped to a store in Asbury Park NJ in 2003. When I called that store they told me they opened up in 2010. The 2nd rep told me it was sent out April 2003 but there was no record of where it was shipped. So how does the warranty dept know what to say, to make people go away

Are you the original purchaser? If so, don't you know where you bought it (and have the receipt)?

The warranty department determines coverage based on the sales receipt showing that you're the original purchaser and that you bought it from an Authorized Fender Dealer (authorized dealer at the time of your purchase).

Then as long as you have the receipt (or the store can provide you with a duplicate) you can take it to any Fender Authorized Service Center for an evaluation.

Even with a warranty, it might not be covered. I've been addicted to various Fender Fora since before that model debuted and this is the first time I've read about one with finish problems -- if the other 999 are fine and healthy this may be more of an "act of God" than a "manufacturing flaw".

But the first step is to take it to a Service Center, show them your receipt, let them examine the guitar and they'll make a determination about whether it's a manufacturing flaw and what they can do about it. If that determination doesn't satisfy you, then you go over the Service Center's head and contact FMIC directly. (Note that all repairs are done by Authorized Service Centers, not by Fender itself, though in some cases Fender will send replacements to the Service Center rather than have the Service Center attempt a repair.)

I don't know why the "Fender reps" you talked to didn't tell you that, or why they wasted your time, or why you didn't just tell them "I bought it from so and so, I have the original receipt" when they started babbling about where they originally shipped it.
