I think I made a mistake - I ordered this beautiful guitar - too beautiful, especially for my first guitar. I am literally afraid to play it without a pick guard. Not that I strum like an ape, but it's just too beautiful. It's been sitting here in the case for over 3 weeks, and it's too late for me to return it. My only option is to trade it in, and I know I'm going to take a beating - but this is my own fault.

I should have gone with my first choice - an American Vintage 64 in white. I love the fact that if they get prettier as they age, and I don't have to worry about chips or dings - in fact, they only add to the charm.

Does anyone have one they'd like to trade for a NEW Koa?

Just taking a shot in the dark here...

Quit your obsessing and just play it... That's what they were made for !!

It's NOT the Hope Diamond, the Shroud of Turin or even Buddy's Strat, Fender made hundreds, if not thousands, of them.

Besides, worrying about scarring the guitar will be a good training aid.

If it gets relic'd, so what, that'll give you street cred.

cheers!

Now that's funny!

One side of my brain is saying... "damn.. he's totally right"
The other side is saying... "trade me for that vintage white tele!"

The Select has other qualities than the pure visual. The quarter-sawn birdseye neck is probably the stiffest of any non-masterbuilt Fender. The pickups are better than the standard issue. The neck is more comfortable, with super smooth wooden edges.

Play it, because it is a very good guitar. That it also happens to look stunning is just icing on the cake.
Then get a cheaper one too, so you have a travel guitar you don't have to worry so much about others picking up.
Buying a Select and after the first day or two daring to actually play it was the smartest thing I did. It plays so well that I practice much more than I did before. I love to pick it up and play.

That is one helluva 1st guitar. Just play it and see what happens. Perhaps you will form a bond with it and forget all about that vintage 64.

Usually when it's too pretty to play you bought a Gibson.

Most of us dream of/want that guitar, and you just want to get rid of it because it's pretty......sounds crazy.

Just put a pickguard on it, even if you have to put some holes in it, or just play it like most of the people here would, and I'm pretty sure you won't worry about it when people will praise the sound.

One word: NO

Screwing holes in that top would in my estimate instantly drop the used price by at least $500.

Maybe bash it against the wall a couple of times so you won't have to worry about that first scratch..?
Or invite Pete Townsend for a musically inspired dinner.

Play it! It'll look better the more dings you put in it. Damn straight it's a pretty guitar but these things are meant to be played, so stop ya whining and play the damn thing ;)

Use this as a pick. Worries over.

I just don't get how people manage to scratch up their guitars with a pick. The distance between the strings and the guitar is greater than the distance between the strings. If you can manage to hit a string, I should think you should be able to miss the guitar finish too.
In my experience, the pick guard helps prevent damage from the pinkie, not the pick.

Then again, a Fender Select surely isn't the right guitar for windmilling.
