Hello Guys,
I need your help assessing the price of my Telecaster.
It's serial number is: 343613

Pictures:

It has 2 Gibson Humbuckers and additional added switch. It was colored again (before i bought it).

How could i know more or less what is it's price ?

Thank you all for helping!

Looks like 2 full-size DiMarzio humbuckers plus one single-coil size humbucker. The body cavities had to be routed/enlarged for all 3 pickups.

Because the humbucker cavity in the bridge position is larger than the stock cavity, the original bridge (if you have it) wouldn't cover up the hole. The disassembled Strat trem bridge slapped onto the body has almost certainly left dents/an outline in the face of the guitar which wouldn't be covered if you put a regular Strat/Tele hardtail bridge there instead.

The neck looks like it's been refretted with huge frets and the fretboard refinished.

You say it was "colored again"? I assume that means repainted/refinished.

Refinishing knocks off about half of any collectors' value. The body routing kills the remaining collectors' value.

As such, it's just a used, modified guitar. $700~1000 maybe, if you find someone who wants an old guitar with those crudely done mods.

Dear strayedstrater,

Thanks for replying.

Yes, I was told that it was refinished, i'm not sure about refretted because i'm not familiar with the original model.

So, you think that even though it's an original American Fender Tele 1971, the mods knock off the price dramatically ? Could you assess it's original value without such mods ?

Thanks again for helping,

Gev

I think it's more realistic to halve your estimate - that's Real World...

cheers!

Yes and yes
No more original, new paint , new fret , body routing , switch on chrome plate , cut value .

No mod and full original ; close to $2500

Yes, using the word "original" here is an insult. It's as far from original as it's possible to get, and as a result, the value is whatever you can get for it for its other qualities, should they be there.

Personally, $325 is as far as I'd go for value for this Frankencaster, if it plays really well. Less if it doesn't.

The easiest way to assign a value to a guitar is either by checking out the completed auctions on #bay or using the Vintage Guitar (magazine) price guide. A 1971 Tele in all original player condition would bring between 2k -2.5k on a good day. A rare color in unplayed collector condition would crack 3k and might even hit 3.5. A guitar that has been modded, cut up and routed out is probably more valuable parted out. It might be worth $700 as a whole but the parts that are original may bring $1000.00.
My first real guitar is a '77 Telecaster that I bought new in '79 and unfortunately I routed it out to stick a humbucker into the neck position when I was in my punk phase. A few years later I discovered blues music and brought it back to stock. I've had numerous blues players autograph it over the years. Albert King, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, Pinetop Perkins, Mick Taylor, Stevie Ray, Jimmy Vaughn, John Hammond, Link Wray, johnny Copeland, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker and the list goes on.....

Looking all the mods that were made, the value will be greatly lowered.

according to the Vintage Guitar 2014 Price guide:
Excellent Condition
Low end: $5,500
High end : $6,800

Light professional modifications: -5% lalue
Poorly done modifications: -50%

Keep in mind the I'm seeing that the market is pretty weak right now. From my perspective, e-bay prices are kind dirrecting the values, reguardless of what the guides might say.

I hope this helps.
