I had my first telecaster, bought in 1971, stolen from me in a car accident. To replace it I bought another tele, a 78 Am. Std.
I used the guitar up to the late 80's and then I purchased another telecaster that was made in Japan. I had been playing a lot on the road and the 78 was getting kind of a beating.
So when I came home with the 78 and the 81, I took the 78 to a luthier to have the frets dressed and the neck adjusted. I took the 81 out on the road.
I came back to town and picked up the 78 and stored it. A while later I took it out to play a show and I noticed that the knobs looked different.
It turned out the luthier had taken the bridge pickup and both knobs from the guitar and by the time I got to notice it he had divorced his wife and left the area.
I have been searching ever since for a set of knobs for the guitar. In the late 70's Fender changed the control knobs on the tele for about 5 years. They were called "tall boys" and they are difficult to find.
I replaced the bridge pickup with one from a 66 tele. But I would like to find a set of the 78 knobs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If anyone does have any ideas about an actual 78 bridge pickup that would be cool as well.

Sorry that your tech ripped you off.

This is the first time I've heard that '70s Teles had "tall boy" knobs (first time I've heard of "tall boys" other than Rio Grande Tall Boy pickups).

Google mostly turned up your threads over on TDPRI. But I did find this link for supposed '70s repro knobs: http://www.petesrareguitars.com/products/Reproduction-70%27s-Telecaster-knobs.html. He doesn't list height specs -- you should definitely contact him first and make sure those are correct (some other Google hits say there are no absolutely correct '50s, '60s, or '70s knobs in current production).

Otherwise you're probably stuck with eBay or similar.
