I picked up my first Telecaster this week, a brand new Vintage '72 Telecaster Custom that is absolutley beautiful! I've been playing for 35+ of my 50 years and this is probably the nicest axe I've ever owned and I'm thrilled to own it, except for one odd issue:

Every time I start playing the high E-string will suddenly catch/hook onto the last screw on the humbucking neck pickup and get stuck there. I'm not insanely hacking away or aggressive or anything like that, pretty much just standard strumming & picking, but then I start hearing a high-pitched squeel and look down to see the string is caught on the edge/lip of the top pickup screw. If this wasn't a brand spanking new Custom Tele I wouldn't hesitate to start twisting screws, messing with the height adjustment, etc., but I'm a little more hesitant to mess with anything since this literally only has about an hour of playtime on it. If I wasn't in MN (where the high temperature today is a balmy 12 degrees) I'd just toss it in the car and go see some local guitar tech, but I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has ever heard of such a thing before or if anyone has any suggestions for a quick and easy fix?

I'm actually surprised that the string even moves so far that it even comes close to that screw, but it happens every time I start playing. I can't believe that of the millions of Teles that have been sold over the years that I'm the first person to ever encounter this problem.

I'll really appreciate any comments or suggestions that anyone can offer, and thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like you need to lower that pickup just a tad to prevent this. Sometimes it is the easy answer.

Or, since you're in MN during winter, where its going to be bone dry inside, make sure you adjust the intonation on the neck, and then adjust the saddle height.
I.e. a winter setup.

Thanks for your replies, I appreciate it.

You're right, I just needed to adjust that pickup height a little bit and the problem was solved. Not a big deal, and I guess I was just a little anxious since I litterally had just taken the thing out the box. I'm still surprised that even mild strumming makes the strings move far enough to even come close to that screw, but the only other possibility would be that the magnets in the pickup were strong enough to actually pull the string towards it, which seems even less possible.

This guitar is just awesome, absolutely gorgeous, and totally the nicest axe I've ever owned. Thanks again for your input.
