Some of their guitars do not have microtilt and the system can only make corrections at the butt end of the neck not for situations in which the correction needs to be made at the other end. As for sizes, most situations only require about a .010, but it would be nice if they offered .020 and .030.

You are correct sir!!
The micro-tilt only tilts the neck backwards, which is rarely the direction in which neck adjustment is required.
My solution for a Tele that I built, using a Nashville Deluxe neck, was strips of masking tape above the top screws.
For reference as to the amount of adjustment needed, the low E string sat on the frets with the bridge saddles adjusted to a reasonable height.

Each strip of masking tape makes a rather large change in neck geometry, and it is advised to reassemble the guitar after each strip of masking tape is applied.
Three strips of masking tape provided perfect action for me with a fairly low bridge height.
The guitar plays great using this shimming method.

I like the idea of that method, easily undone and with zero chance of damage.

I think I prefer the metal shim method to the layered tape/paper method.
I'm not sure I would want compressible material between the neck and body.

Why not?
Do you think that wood is not compressible?
Is not masking tape essentially made from wood?
I'm not sticking a sponge in there!!
The vast majority of the heal of the neck continues to directly contact the body pocket.
And from experience, I can tell you that masking tape works great!!!

On the other hand, "objectively," metal has none of the properties of wood.
"Subjectively," a metal shim might work fine....
But masking tape offers a finer level of adjustibility than a metal shim, unless you are using aluminum foil as your metal shim.

In a word? No.
Sorry.

Hardwood is not as compressible as masking tape. You are correct in that the membrane portion of the tape contains cellulose fibres but but that doesn't make it as solid as a piece of hardwood. Additionally, the spongy glue certainly does not contain cellulose. A metal shim should provide a significantly better transfer of vibrational energy between the two pieces than layers of masking tape. Ever wrap layers of masking tape around a wooden stick? Try it and see for yourself. The knob of tape you build up does not feel like hardwood. It is much softer and it feels a little bit spongy, too.

Masking tape isn't the only thing you can layer. You can layer shim stock, too. You can also get shim stock in different thicknesses.

The entire heal of the neck is in full contact with the body from at least 1/8" below the top screws to the base of the neck.
From a theoretical vibration or sustain standpoint, a masking tape shim has absolutely no actual detrimental effect whatsoever.

One ridiculous argument deserves another:
Try it for yourself!!
Pick up an aluminum baseball bat and hit a baseball?
It doesn't feel like wood and it doesn't sound like wood, now does it???

Sorry dude.
Your 2¢ is a dollar shy of the load....

No it doesn't sound the same as a wooden bat but I still thank you for making my point for me. Vibrational energy is a physical force. It's not electro-magnetic in nature like some other forms of energy. An aluminium baseball bat does succeed in transferring physical energy from the hitter's arms to the ball. Perhaps it does not do so in precisely the same manner as hickory but it is at least a reasonable facsimile. Wad up some masking tape into a bat and give that a go and see what you get.

Ridiculous argument indeed.

If you're going to be argumentative just for the sake of being argumentative then I am done with you.

I must say, i never thought I'd see a discussion on the relative properties, advantages and disadvantages of particular Shim material choices. viva le difference!!

The best thing is obviously not to have the need of a shim, but heck use what you like and works for you. In my CBS FEnder setup years, Fender's shims were cardboard material of some sort.....about the thickness of a matchbook cover.....which is what i used when a dedicated shim couldn't be found.
Luckily, the amount of times a shim was required were very very very very few.
Now ....quit arguing about shims and argue about something meaningful....like was the beatles hair really all that long?

Enjoy the weekend !!! All the best,
rob

Of course not. Submarine regulations.

Me, I wish I had long hair, but I keep it less than 3' so it doesn't get stuck in the seat belt latch or fly.

Well, they used to be made of Hickory but the idea is still the same.
