Hi,

Was just looking at Telecaster's to buy, and I noticed a SH at the end of the name for example Fender Select Carved Blackwood Top Telecaster SH. This is my first Electric guitar (have acoustic) and when the guy in the guitar shop was playing some funk music, I thought the telecaster sounded better, any thoughts?. I have a list of songs I want to play: Dire Straits Sultans of Swing, Eric Clapton Leyla, Choir Boys Run to Paradise, and anything Michael Jackson or the Red Hot Chilli Peppers :). Do you think the Telecaster is a good first choice, as thats what I'm going for at the moment.

God Bless,

Renai.

Did the guitar have a humbucker pickup in the neck position? Usually describes the pickup arrangement. SH would usually mean a Single coil at the bridge and Humbucker at the neck. A std strat for example is SSS, a les Paul would be HH.

S/H usually means second hand of course.

I just looked it up - that model does have a neck humbucker and a bridge single coil.

The Select Carved Blackwood Telecaster SH is backrouted, lacking off a pickguard.

Personally I would put a 1-ply black guard on that guitar for a more proper look.

I would not - that would depreciate the value quite a lot. Not only because of screw holes in the gorgeous finish, but because the covered wood would age differently.
Also, be careful where you put screws in a chambered guitar.

I've seen backrouted Teles on that series but it would be nice to have a backrouted Select Strat with Floyd Rose tremolo, HHH pickups w/ S1 switch and Clapton mid boost.

Hi,

Spumoni, Tony, i cant see your post, but did you end up buying the Koa Telecaster?. They were my first choice, and I initially thought the Telecaster sounded better for funk, but after looking at a youtube video, i'm now thinking of Stratocasters. I like the rock sound a Stratocaster gives, but I'm torn between the two. Heres the link to the youtube video:

I have to go into the store again and get him to play some more music on a telecaster and then a stratocaster.

Cheers,

Renai.

@renai

You can get both if your budget allows such purchases.

One personal recommendation is to buy a MIM Standard Strat for a good start and "hot-rodding" it with a good-sounding humbucker in the bridge and an active mid boost circuitry for a more beefy attitude before moving to the more expensive MIA models.

Thanks for the advice Chromeface :) I think the Stratocaster sounds beefy enough for my ears with just a SSS. I'll think about getting one of each, just feel guilty spending so much money on my first electric guitar!. I'll probably go with the MIA at first, seeing as though they are better :)

Renai - I've already watched the same YouTube link several times, and just about any other video with the "tele vs. stat" theme! No doubt, the guitar more commonly used for the music we want to play is the strat - but I am so in love with the simplicity of the Tele, and especially in love with the select series in particular. I am just about ready to pull the trigger on the Koa Tele. I'm thinking I will be able to make it sound like anything I want. Initially, I knew I wanted a start - never had any interests in the Tele's because they reminded me of country twangy stuff which I'm not a fan of. But for some reason, every time I'd go in a store, I'd migrate to the Tele's.

So far, I've played NEITHER! I'm one of those fools that bases my decisions purely on looks. :)

This will be my first electric guitar purchase. I recently purchased a Fender Jazz bass American Standard, then quickly upgraded to the select series and am VERY happy with it.

I know if I get the Strat, I will always wished I got the Tele. So that will probably be the direction I go. I will probably order it next week.

Congratulations on making up your mind! I'm still to decide yet. Be sure to post a pic of your purchase when the time comes :) I'll post a pick of mine. I need to go into the store and see what I like again. I'll probably gravitate towards the tele again too, but I'm going to get him to try and make the Strat sound like a tele, that way, I can have the Strat sound and the Tele sound.

If you want having that twangy, gutsy Tele spank in a Strat, I'd recommend the APST-1 Twang Banger from Seymour Duncan.

One of the secrets is the copper-coated steel bottom plate.
Combine that with the aggressive coil windings and the AlNiCo 2 magnets wrapped in plain enamel wire.
The result is a high output, singlecoil twangbeast.
Recommended for the bridge position with either APS-2s (for a maple fingerboard) or SSL-2s (for a rosewood fingerboard) in the neck and middle positions.

You can eventually order a custom Strat pickguard routed for a Tele bridge pickup from WD.
