I was in a pawn shop about three years ago and I found a telecaster I liked. I should have picked it up but I didnt. I was wondering if someone knew what model this is?

At first glance it looks like a MIJ/CIJ walnut Tele that someone changed the pickguard on (3rd party wood pickguards are readily available), but looking at the wood grain and stain of the body, I have a hard time believing this is walnut - something makes me suspicious that this is a fake.

Fender Japan do a lot of weird and wonderful guitars that we never get to see in the west but nothing about that looks right. I wouldn't even make an offer unless the store will detach the neck and let you check for body stamps/dates. I'm not convinced it's walnut either, could just be ash with a dark stain.

Could be a Palo Escrito Telecaster from 2007, 013-0083-321.

Essentially a 60's Classic Series Telecaster, with an Alder Body was finished with Palo Escrito Veneered Top.

The pickguard doesn't fit with the PE so may have been swopped out to match the veneered top
