Hey guys,

I am new here and was hoping to get some help with a few questions concerning the neck plates on American Deluxe models. I am fully aware that the contour neck plate design was added to American Deluxe models after 2002.

I have searched and cannot find much information on: whether ALL American Deluxe Telecasters have the contoured neck plate or if some have the regular production squared neck plate. I have heard that it is different for the ones with Ash bodies. Do the Ash Telecasters have contoured neck plates or do they come with squared neck plates?

I really appreciate the help. Thanks.

The beveled neck plate was added on the Stratocaster and bass guitars that year; it became a standard feature for the alder-bodied Telecasters two years later.

Only Ash Telecasters came with the squared neck plate.

Why not sending a PM to John C and Xhefri?

chromeface is correct - square neck plate through 2003, contoured neck plate on alder bodied models starting in 2004. Also the ash bodied models did not have the "tummy cut" until 2012.

Just to complicate it a bit further, artist series Deluxe models may not have the contour neck mount even if American, while at least one non-Deluxe artist series does. And Select models do too.

Ash-bodied Teles were featured with a tummy cut and a bound top from the introduction of the series in 1998 to 2003; for a period between 2004 and 2011 the bodies were slab.

Unlike the alder-bodied Deluxes the ash body models lack off a bound top.

Yep - I should have been more clear that I was referring to the "American Deluxe Ash Telecaster" for the body contour. For the first generation American Deluxe Teles there was not a separate ash body model; instead most of the translucent colors were over an ash body (3-color burst and trans red were alder) and the solid colors were alder. The ash body version became a separate model with version 2 in 2004 and continues that way with the current models.

Thank you guys so much. I have to confess, I am primarily a Gibson guy, but ever since my first few years playing have been head over heels for Telecasters. I currently have one American Standard and am in the process of making a trade for what I believe is an American Deluxe. The deluxe in question is a 2009, has a DZ serial, no body binding, square neck plate, ash body, abalone markers, maple board, etc. I knew about the ash ones had no body binding, but was awfully confused about the neck plate.

So, in sum, the neck plates on ash bodied deluxe Teles are squared? Does anyone know the reasoning behind this??

Again, thank you so much

Yes - the neck plates on the ash bodied ones are square. The only reason I can think is that Fender wanted to keep the ash bodied version a bit more like vintage Teles to give players who preferred the no contour/original shape an American Deluxe model. I suppose they simply decided to add the body contour when they added it to the ash bodied American Standards (which also use the square neck plate) so they only have to keep one set of ash body blanks around for "modernized" Tele models. But that's just a guess on my part.

A little confused? I have just purchased a 1998-99 American Deluxe Tele. Three tone sunburst, Noiseless pickups, Square "Corona" neck plate, White binding on body top, Contoured back, Maple neck and headstock, with a rosewood fingerboard. There seems to be a confusion regarding the body wood? Ash or Alder. I'm assuming this body is Alder?

Yep, alder.

Ash was used for translucent finishes such as Transparent Crimson and Transparent Teal.
