Howdy folks.

I'm going to splash out on a Telecaster after New Year now that I have a new job with a bit of a raise. I intend trying a very limited bunch at my local stores but may end up buying online.

I already have other guitars such as a Strat and SG. I'm drawn to the Telecaster mainly due to wishing to branch out into country chicken picking type stuff. However, I would still likely use it for blues and rock type stuff too.

Just trying to get a sense of the different views on what models are hits or misses. I'm looking at either:

- American Standard.
- American Deluxe.
- American Deluxe Thinline.

What are the views on the standard versus deluxe in relation to the N3 pickups versus the standards? I quite fancied a butterscotch one but this isn't available as a Standard.

I was also considering the Thinline but I don't see many country twangers using these as mainstays.

Any thoughts? Any I've not gave due consideration to?

Buy in line ONLY if you can return it for another if it do not work properly .

I never buy a guitar if I can't test it , never. Better to buy second hand in your area. You'll save more money than "in line" and you can test it .

I have one 1983 American made and '52 reissue made in 2000. Fews Strat.......

I agree with strattele52, it's just better to put your hands on the instrument and try it out, than get something you don't like and personally, returning is such a hassle.
I've got a standard tele, and I love it, great build and good feel. I've changed the pickups though to texasspecials, and it became a very versatile instrument.
Another thought, that for the price of a new Standard you can hunt down a used butterscoth 52 reissue, and there you a have a real quality guitar.
I just bought one and couldn't be happier

I own 3 Telecasters:

A 1999 Fender MIM Nashville Telecaster Deluxe - modified to Standard Telecaster configuration - Alder Body, Rosewood FB, 21-frets, Tex-Mex Pups.

A 2012 Fender USA FSR Telebration Empress Telecaster w/ Maple Neck, Empress Body, 22-frets, Hot Tele® Single-Coil Pickups with Alnico 3 Magnets (Neck & Bridge), Master Greasebucket Tone Circuit (Rolls Off Highs without Adding Bass).

Finally, a 2013 Fender Indonesian FSR Custom Telecaster w/ Mahogany carved top Body, Mahogany Set Neck w/ Rosewood FB, 22-frets, HH Active Humbuckers - EMG 81/85, and a 24.5" scale length.

All VERY different Telecasters, but all really Primo guitars !

If I were to choose one to play the style you describe, it would be either the '99 Nashville Deluxe or the Empress. Either of these will come close to the Tone you're looking for.

Here are the three of them:

cheers!

The "classic" Telecaster with two single coil is a must . American Standard serie

Not an American Standard, but Fender has your butterscotch FSR Tele right here:

I used the Guitar Center reference because a lot of their branches seem to have this guitar in stock, since you want to try it out. They sell it as cheaply as you can find online.

Thanks stratele52 - I'm the standard is the way to go. Had the same dilemma with a strat earlier this year and have never regretted getting the standard.

Thanks Rudorama - The link (from my country) doesn't take me to a guitar. However, I do know the ones you're meaning as the link reads FSR ash Telecaster. I guess this is another good option. It gets me a butterscotch Telecaster with 6 saddles on the bridge. Not sure I fancy the brown scratch plate but this would be easily swapped out.

Due to the different pickups in both, I'm gonna see if I can try both somewhere.

Thanks both of you (and everyone else) for your help there.
