Hi guys!

Just bought a 52 avri tele, at least that's what I thought, but when I took the neck off to verify the date of manufacture, I found hotrod written on it.
Did they change the neck, and put a vintage hotrod neck on it?

Hi Sev,

Where did you buy the guitar?
The bridge saddles do not appear to be brass in the picture.
On an American Vintage '52 Telecaster, the bridge saddles should be brass.
If it has a 5 number serial number on the bridge plate, indicating that it is a pre-2012 Tele, you may want to call Fender customer service and ask them about the date of the guitar.

Thanks MickJagger,

I bought it from GC, so there is no issue about returning, i already talked to them, but the "problem' is that i really like the guitar. The sound, the feel, it's just awesome and it stays in tune too.

So i have a dilemma on my hands, should I return it and get one that is really a 52 reissue and not a partcaster, given that that would be the reason of wanting a reissue :)
or just keep it and have a good guitar. I'm still pondering

I did some research, and read that a lot of people were complaining about the neck radius and the thin frets on the reissues, and praise the neck on the hotrods, so I guess the previous owner just changed the neck, especially that they look the same.

I checked the saddles and they are brass, even though they look silver in the pictures. Thanks for spotting that.

Finally I wrote Fender about it, because I would really like to know what year the body is, but that was about 3 weeks ago and they haven't responded yet. i think I'll write them again.

I see that I didnt say that the neck has a manufacturing date of 2010.

I'd like to know if somebody think that I'm wrong in my conclusions though.

Thanks again MickJagger for respondiong

There was at one time a Hotrod American vintage 52. Main differences were fretboard radius and pickup wiring if I recall correctly. This may be what you have.

You may very well have a partscaster. The steel barrels are for sure on a '72 Custom Reissue.

Was the guitar sold to you as "New" or used? If it was sold as "New" it could just have been mismarked at the factory? All else looks right for a 52 AVRI. As for a guitar sitting since 2010, it is certainly possible, I bought a guitar that was new two years ago and it was a 2007 guitar that just hadn't been sold.

FWIW

Also, I believe the AV'52RI necks are poly & the Hod Rod's were/are nitro. Someone correct me if I am incorrect.

This could have been a main factor for the original owner to have swapped out necks...

So the necks were poly and the body nitro? That's odd

The AV necks are definitely nitro finish, as is the body.

I wish that this would've been the case but I bought it used. I will contact Fender again to find out what year the body is, though I'm not sure how that will help me :?: :(
Just have to figure it out if I want this guitar that plays and sounds great or a real 52AVRI

And I've been pondering this for the past three weeks, any thoughts?

Pull the pickguard and see what information you may glean from the cavities. I went back through the post and from what I have read, it looks like you have an AVRI body attached to a Vintage Hot Rod neck. What may have happened is, someone bought the AVRI and did not like the 7.25" radius on the fretboard, replacing it with a Hot Rod neck, that has a 9.5" radius.

Whether or not to keep it, that is solely up to you. The staff at GC should be able to track down whom they bought the guitar from, thus allowing you the opportunity to try and locate the original neck, if it was replaced.

Um, no. If GC handed out customer information, they'd be gone faster than you could say "lawsuit".

Arth1 is correct that GC will not give you any information on the former owner, which they probably have no accessible record for anyway.

In looking at your pictures, I’m wondering if the number 73131 might be the same serial number that is on the bridge plate of the guitar. If it is, then someone put a Tele neck pickup and a new pickguard on the guitar, and the guitar was originally an American Vintage Hot Rod Tele.

Are the numbers the same???

No, they're not, that's when I realized I had something weird here.

Thanks for the input guys, I'll take the pickguard off, you made me curious, but it's probably not a hotrod body, but who knows what I'll find.

I'll let you know

Call the Fender Consumer Relations Department after January 1 and give them both serial numbers (really not sure if the number on the neck constitutes a serial number) and see what they say about those serial numbers. They can tell you what type of guitars those serial numbers are from and when they were made.

Thanks again MickJagger will do for sure.

I'm curious about the body because I really like the sound of the pickups
