Hi guys

I was wondering if the hollow part in a thinline tele really makes a difference? To me it doesn't look like it has any function for the sound because it still looks very solid. Isn't it just made to lose some weight?

grtz

I think the pickups have more to do with the sound
than the chambered body. I don't have one anymore,
but I recall a thin sound vs a standard Tele. Different
strokes...go try them, you may like them. I had an older
70s model.

It was made primarily to save weight, yes - the Telecaster had become quite heavy with the denser woods used, and its thickness compared to the competition. And also top-heavy, because the control channel and neck cutout were both on the same side.

It does affect sound, but not a lot. The older models more so, as they have much bigger chambers than the re-issues, where the hollow part is only on one side and smaller.

The chambered telecasters are more resonant.

Acoustically there is a difference which makes it great for practicing late at night when everybodies sleeping.

Plugged in you'd need a direct comparison to one with the same electronics with the tone and volume controls all the way up. If anyone has a 72 Deluxe tele reissue and a 72 Thinline tele reissue, maybe they could chime in. Different body woods on these two and the Deluxe is solid, but I doubt that would matter.

I'm sure the pickups trump all other tone enhancers/differences that two different telecaster bodies have.

I have a 72 Thinline Reissue and a Squier Thinline Vintage Modified. The 72 is all around excellent! If you don't mind thick necks with a vintage radius then try a 72 (try a '69 if single coils is your thing) The Squier is my favorite craigslist budget buy ($125) and sounds excellent as well. Big differences are a thin modern radius neck with 24 3/4 scale. I did have to spend hours the first two days on the Squier tweaking the pickup heights to find their sweet spots. Only mod I made to it was adding independent tone controls for each pickup only cause I do that to all my guitars.

I have never owned a Tele but I am thinking about a 2013 AVRI 1969 tele thinline. Will it have a good vintage tone and feel?
Thanks John

I'm not sure what makes the American Vintage different, but check these two videos.
The made in mexico ones sound very good, so if you like what you hear im sure the US ones can't disappoint.

Yes !!

The Stratocaster is an amazing instrument from the get go... you can't praise it too highly...

But the Telecaster is the Swiss Army Knife of guitars... Country, Western, Blues, Rock, Pop, even Jazz... The Tele excels at them all !

The AVRIs are great instruments and pay true homage to their named ancestors !

One Caveat however...

NEVER discount the Amp.

The Amp is where the proverbial Rubber meets the Road !

All you really hear is the Amp.

A really great guitar played through a lousy Amp is gonna lose a lot in translation.

Played through a Vintage Amp, or even a decent modern RI Amp, you'll find amazing Tone reminicient of what's stored in your memory.

Play it through a Metal Amp and it's not going to be the same.

cheers!

The last time I was down to the store they had marked down the new AVRI 69 telecaster thinline down to $1045.00 I might go and see if I can get them down a little further, I love to wheel and deal. It is really light with the mahogany body, plays great and I think it is speaking to me. I have not owned a Tele before so this is a step in a new direction. I have played many new and used ones and want to be sure I get a good sounding Telecaster. I am not one to sell off guitars so I don't mind buying new with a warranty. I have used the warranty on my Gibsons in the past
I play through a 1964 Fender Tremolux with a 1964 Fender Reverb unit, a Fender 2X12 cabinet with english greenbacks and a second Fender 2X12 cabinet with a pair of Altec 417 speakers.
Thanks John
