I've got a "new" 2012 Am Standard Telecaster. The low E string is 2/10" inward from the edge of the fretboard whereas the high E is 1/10" inward. It plays fine but looks weird. Also none of the strings are centered over the pole pieces. No problem sonically but I'm wondering if others have this set up from the factory.

If the string positions over the nut are fine, then it's possible that the neck has shifted slightly sideways. This is not uncommon with bolt-on necks. To fix it, you just need to undo the four neck screws slightly and then pull, or push, the neck in the direction it needs to correct the problem. In your case, towards the bass side. Then re-tighten the screws.

When you state that it is "new," the store you bought it from should do this for you, if you are not sure about doing it yourself.

Thanks for the info. I'm new to bolt on necks. The inspection sticker is stamped Nov 2012. I just got it but the dealer is in VT and I'm in Arkansas.

That the high E is closer to the edge than the low E is normal, and desired. Perhaps not as big a difference as in your case, though.
The main reason is that the deep E is much softer and can more easily be pushed down at an angle. So you need a bit more fretboard edge.
Check the nut, and measure from the middle of the E groove to the edge on both sides, and you'll likely find a slight difference.

If this is a problem mostly on the high frets, and you don't feel like resetting the neck, some bridges let you adjust the strings sideways a small amount.

Slack four neck bolt just enough to put the neck straigth . Hold it and thight the bolts . It is a common problem on used guitar ,not new one.

Easy with the help of another person for the first time .
