I have a 60th anniversary telecaster (made in USA). I got it in a trade for a drum kit. The guitar is like show room new it has maybe been played once or twice if at all. It has been in the hard case the entire time i have owned it. I also have all the papers and such that came with it. I do not play and so it just sits in the case. I don't really need the money but I have thought about selling it. But I was wondering if the value of it will go up, down or if it will stay about the same for the next 5 to 7 years. If it is likely to go down in value at all than I would rather just sell it now but if it is likely to go up at all than I will keep it for sure. If it is expedited to just hold its value than I will probably just hang on to it for a while longer. Any in put would be appreciated thanks.

The typical price curve is an immediate drop upon buying, followed by a shallow drop for the next few years that eventually turns into a slow rise. You need to keep it for longer than 5-7 years before it's back at its original value.

Rarity affects the value, but "60th Anniversary" applies to pretty much every single Tele for the better part of two years, so unless there are other factors making it rare, it won't be.

I think the OP was talking about a 60th anniversary of the telecaster. The one on Reverb is a 50th anniversary of Fender the company. there was no 60th anniversary of Fender the company telecaster, but I get your point. As a reference point what was the original price of the 1996 Fender anniversary telecaster in 1996 compared to the 2013 price ($995) of the same guitar? :)

[x] The value to me will increase proportunately to my ability to play it linked with the maturity of the relationship between me and said guitar. :D

If it's any good why sell?

Better to free up the money now. The tele isn't as great of an investment as it may seem. The real value is in the playability.

If seen as an investment, you also have to factor in the huge amount of money you rake in on playing it, less the money you could have earned in the time you spend on it.

Seriously, don't buy a guitar thinking you'll get your money back. If depreciation is a concern, buy a five to seven year old guitar from a top brand, but in an uncommon configuration. It may still not appreciate more than the inflation, but chances are much better.

I voted value unchanged.

Your odds are better if it's a 2011 Limited Edition 60th Anniversary Telecaster in blackguard blonde. This is the 60th Anniversary model #011-6112-768. It is essentially an american standard telecaster. Even better for one of the Telebration models - limited to 500 or 300 depending on the model.

Even so, optimistcally, the most you'd gain in your given timespan would be $75-$125 over the original purchase price. And that all depends on condition and timing. Selling it when there are 6-10 others on the market at the same time will not benefit you.

cheers!

Didn't all Fender guitars produced in '96 have a 60th anniversary label on them?

No, all Fender instruments produced in 1996 had a 50th Anniversary of Fender medallion on them. All Fender instruments produced in 2006 had a 60th Anniversary of Fender medallion on them.

That being said it appears the OP is talking about the 60th Anniversary of the Telecaster; Lightnin MN discussed those models in his post.

Yes, but the OP is talking about the 60th Anniversary of the Telecaster: 1951-2011

All USA made (not certain of MIM and ROW) Telecasters from late 2010 thru early 2012 had a commemorative neckplate:

But, there was one 'Official' 60th Anniversary model - 2011 Limited Edition 60th Anniversary Telecaster in blackguard blonde - model #011-6112-768. I thought I read it was limited to 2,011 produced, but I can't substantiate that. It differed only slightly from an American Standard Telecaster.

In addition, Fender released the Telebration Series of Telecasters from about mid-2011 to mid-2012. These were 12 distinct Limited Edition models each released almost monthly and limited to 500 copies (one model - the Old Pine Telecaster was subsequently shortened to a run of 300 due to the inavailability of the wood). The Telebration Telecasters were each unique employing exotic woods, special pups and other features.

Admittedly, this is all a little confusing and I suspect that several un-wary Buyers paid Premium money to some unscrupulous Seller, thinking they were buying something unique or rare, when in fact they were buying just an ordinary Telecaster which had a $12 60th Anniversary neckplate.

It pays to know your Teles I guess !

cheers!

Where did you get the 500 number for the Telebration series? I've emailed fender and they said they had no info on how many lite rosewood teles were produced.

It was Fender's own Press Release announcing the Telebration Series.

However, the release was somewhat vague on a few points. It said 'about 500' for each model in the series and issuance was to begin about March '11, etc.

We do know subsequently that the Old Pine Tele run was cut short to 'about' 300 due to the unavailability of the wood and even my Empress Tele was produced in 2 runs of 500 - 500 in Vintage While and 500 in Honeyburst.

cheers!
