I feel a G.A.S. attack coming for the Jim Adkins JA-90.

If it doesn't have a power tube in the circuit...I'm not that interested

I had a bout of that when it came out, but opted for a '72 thinline in the end. The special P90s compressed too much for my liking - I found the WRHs to be more dynamic.

Still, it's a gorgeous guitar, and quite affordable too, so if P90s are your style, go for it!

Instead of guitars that try to do fifty things reasonably well, I'd prefer to have fifty guitars that do one thing only, but extremely well.[/quote]

:D +1 my feelings exactly

I have a JA90, natural finish.

I didn't even know JA existed until I stumbled upon a pic of the guitar while looking for a thinline of some description to add to my collection. soon as I saw it I wanted it. even if it sounded crap I wanted it.

fortunately, it sounds good.

p90's are exactly what you expect, half way house between single coils and a humbucker. however, the Seymour Duncan pickups in the JA90 are very hot, I think somebody else on here with one rated them at about 11k ? I took mine for a setup at a local shop and they guy had to turn his test rig down when he tried the JA90. he said he never has to fiddle with the amp, and the first thing he said was "wow, these pickups are, ermmm, meaty"

bad points - theres not much sound difference between each pickup position. however this could be down the the second, and last bad point - the wiring under the tone and volume pots is not great, I think with some fiddling the controls could be made much more responsive which would bring a wider range of sounds from the guitar. the guitar still sounds great as it is.

the guy I mentioned who tested his pups, he also changed his wiring and pots, and was well chuffed with the results. drew something his name is I think.

the neck is a nice shape, big frets, and the set neck is beautiful and really helps upper fret access. fit and finish is very good, I couldn't find anything wrong with mine other than some traces of polish around the sound holes. no biggy.

I put a bigsby on mine

I have a Squier Vintage modified Tele Custom II on which I want to install a Bigsby. Your bridge looks ideal to replace the factory hardtail bridge on the Squier. Can you measure the height of the low E string above the body right by the bridge? This is a critical measurement for my planned install. Thanks for your help.

Yes, exactly there. With my current Squier Tele, the distance is .484". I need to make certain that any new bridge setup on my guitar doesn't exceed that, or the action may become excessively high.

Thanks for your help by the way.

I'll have a look tomorrow. I don't have any calipers though so I'll do my best with an old skool ruler!

I have one of those cheap digital calipers, which turns out to be very handy in doing guitar setups. I use the depth gauge on the end of the caliper for setting string action by measuring the thickness of the string and adding that to the required action height.

I have a Modern Player and love it. It sounds good and the fit/finish on this Chinese guitar is such that one would think it's the most expensive Tele I own. Now, I going crazy over the JA90 w/Bigsby pictured above. That is simply a most beautiful guitar!!

Hi sorry for the late reply about the measurement. Just used a ruler not overly accurate but it's between 17 and 18mm.

.484 inches it worked out at about 12mm, so even if I'm not totally accurate, I can say it's definitely higher than 12mm, by some way.

I got one of those MP's too when it came out. I visit US once a year, and somehow forgot about JA tele.... I know MP is inexpensive, but it really kicks butt well. Maybe a blessing got that because not too hot. The tone controls really do good job and can get all sorts of lovely tones besides the nasty side. With .011's can get a somewhat Rickenbacker sound. It is just one of those really fun guitars you pick up and takes you to interesting places. Other than the knobs and too much white, lovely guitar (changed the knobs to two chicken heads and two Gretsch knobs).

JA90 thinline w/Seymour Duncan P-90. I picked up the one I wanted and have found a problem getting the high string to play with the same response as the lower 4. When I got it, I had the plastic nut replaced with a bone nut. I play this through a Mustang board into the '65 Deluxe Reverb re-issue but am no getting the spank up top. Any suggestions?
