Hi all

I'm going to be in Florida in a months time and am very much looking forward to visiting a Guitar Centre there as they will have a lot of choice in comparison to mu little isle of Jersey!

So, I've decided that I need a Tele as I haven't got one or ever had one, I'm going to be restricted to what they have in stock and will be getting it shipped back to Jersey.

My question is what would you guy's recommend as my first Tele?

I'm obviously going to spend a couple of hours in there trying all of them and will probably end up with whichever one feels best for me but......

Let’s be honest cash does become an issue (especially as I have three kids!) and I’d like to restrict it to $750 if at all possible although I might stretch to a bit more depending on whether the wife notices me paying!

Thanks all

Sacha

You might find a nice pre-owned American Standard in your
budget range. Try as many as you can and all though the same amp (close to what you have at home).

If they have a Hwy 1, those are pretty cool too. Good luck!

Depending on your location, available time and mobility, don't just restrict yourself to Guitar Center.

Use this site to find other Authorized Fender dealers in the area you're visiting and check them out too.

Lots of people use GC, but lots don't. One thing you don't generally find at your avg. GC is any real expertise. Most are staffed by younger people, many of whom are just there for the job and lack any in-depth product knowledge.

GC is a good place to see all sort of gits under one roof, but there are likely to be several other music/guitar stores in the same general region, smaller shops with a little more knowledge and assistance than GC.

Would also tell them that you're visiting the States and would like to bring a Tele home with you. That may give you bit of leverage on price.

cheers!

I have an older Rickenbacker, a very old LP, and my prize a 1990 American Strat Plus since it was new. It is an amazing guitar, plays and sounds like it should, all in all, what you would expect. I became quite the snob when it came to guitars, nothing but an American made would do for me.

Fast forward to earlier this year when I picked up my MiM FSR Tele. This darn thing is about as much fun as you can have with 6 strings ( and only cost $300.00). I have replaced the pickups with some Fender Vintage Noiseless, but that is only cause I like noiseless pickups, the stock ones sounded like a Tele should all on their own.

I am really getting into open tunings and have been using my FSR for E and D. Now I have decided I need a second Tele for G and A and will not even hesitate to pull the trigger on another MiM Tele. ( but it has to have the humbucker in the neck, yes I am a Keef fan )

The neck, finish and playability are very close, if not even with my American made Strat, but I will guess the pickups and pots are not the same.

Just my two cents worth.

Since you say isle of Jersey, I can only presume you mean Jersey proper, off the French coast. If so, shipping is going to cost a small fortune. I doubt you'll be able to get it shipped for less than $200.

That said, there's plenty to choose from. Are you going for the Tele "twang", or did you want something more solid than a Strat that keeps well in tune? Given that it's your first Tele, I recommend going for one with only one volume and one tone control, i.e. the classic set-up. The simplicity is one of the things that makes it so playable and dependable.

To start, there's the Standard Telecaster (Mexico), at $500, which has plenty of "twang".
Another $100 wlll get you a Cabronita (Mexico), which has two hot humbuckers, if that's your style.
Or an Esquire, which has a single pickup, and the ability to switch off the tone control completely, for a really direct and raw sound.
Then there's the Classic Player Baja (Mexico) at $800, which goes the exact opposite route, with extra parallel switching possibilities for warmer sound.

There are many others in the same price range, but those are the ones I'd look at. They pretty much cover the different aspects of a Telecaster, each in a different way.

At Guitar Center, you have to ask to talk to a manager to get any kind of deal - the people on the floor aren't allowed to budge a penny, even if you point out scratches and dents.
I'd try to haggle for shipping, cause that's really expensive.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm not too worried about shipping as it's generally better than people think when you start getting into long distance. I shipped a les paul from Florida in 2001 which wasn't a huge cost.

I'm currently leaning more and more towards a Baja but I'm going to try a few and see if they have any used american standards.

My ultimate plan is after playing and trying the models I want and others around a similar price I to then see if they can do me a deal for the folowing:

1 x Baja Tele
1 x Modern Player 2 Strat (really want to try one due to the mahogany body and low price)
2 x hard cases
Shipping

Let's see what they can do!

To be fair if they don't offer me a good enough deal I may just buy the Tele and take the neck off and whack it in my luggage.

We shall see!

Cheers all

Sacha

You can also get an American Standard Telecaster and wire it like a Baja.

The American Standard has already the same CS pickups found on the Baja minus the fancy wiring of the latter.

Here's the Baja wiring diagram:

But an American Standard is about 50% more expensive than a Baja. They're great guitars, with better pickups and bridges, but when the stated budget was $750 or perhaps a bit more, they're probably out of range.

+1!

If you add the Baja mod the price for the American Standard would be much higher.
