I've been noticing two trends in live music these days, and it is the great use of the Tele by lead guitarists.

I've also noticed that the Humbucker in the neck position has become pretty popular as well. Being a big fan of Andy Summers and having my own version of his guitar, I can say that the combo of a HB (in the neck) and single coil (in the bridge) sounds great.

I have been playing a Strat since dirt was young and have to admit I am loving my "new" Tele. I don't see the Tele as a replacement for my Strat, but rather it gives me sonic options I didn't have before. Also it seem that I play differently on the Tele, hard to put a finger on it, but I go for runs I might not have selected on the Strat and tend to bend and release a lot differently.

I have a set of Vintage Noiseless pickups coming for my current MiM Tele so i can also use it to record. That will take care of this one, but I am already looking for another one that I can put a 'bucker in the neck and do the Broadcaster/Nocaster wiring so I can get those wicked Keef tones.

More to your point, the Tele has always been the mainstay guitar of Country music and the cross over between Rock and Country seems to be putting the Tele out from again.

If the humbucker uses a 4-conductor cable and has coil tap/split abilities traditional single-coil tones can be achieved via a super 5-way selector and the S1 switch.

Not only popular but also very versatile.

For my A.S. Tele, I went with a Semore Duncan Jazz pickup that was coil split and a 5-way switch. This way I can use the HB and bridge or have a single neck pup and bridge pup for that old school tele middle-position. To compinsate for the volume lost, when I cut out one of the HB coils, I added an Afterburner 20db volume preamp. It doesn't work like the Eric Clapton Mid-range boost; it just brings up the volume.

I find myself using this guitar more and more for pretty much everything. There was a time when only use a Strat (namely my EC Strat), but now, I find myself using them less and less. I have a PRS McCarty, which I love as well, but I don't use it too much, either.
