You know the serial number charts? Yeah, it's another one of those questions.

I have a Mexican Tele, my first and only electric. I got it last December. On the charts, it only goes from MZ1 to MZ5. Well, I have an MZ7! So what does that mean? Is is brand new or something? Forgive me, I'm not super experienced yet.

Thanks

Mercy, I just recieved my Hwy 1 Tele and it is N8 and the numbers for US made don't go that high. My guess for this is because they are new and Fender just hasn't updated their S/N list yet. I would bet that your MIM is more than likely less than 2 yrs old. Hope this assumption helps a little.

MZ7 means it was MADE in 2007. However, it could also be an 08 model, since it was BUILT in that year.

For example, the new '08 MIM Standards are shielded and have different pickups than last year's model, and you'll see a "New and improved '08" sticker on the actual guitar or indicated on the box. But theone YOU buy might have a 7 for the serial number.

Buy the exact same guitar at the end of this year and it will probably be an 8 there.

Good answer Ira, that cleared something up for me too. It actually makes sence. Must be why I didn't figure it out.

I knew this because my own '08 MIM has a 7 number, and I got curious and researched it. I knew it was an '08 model, so why the 7?

i was not entirely sure about all of this, as i'm pretty new to the tele world. i have a new highway one and my serial number begins with a Z. i looked into it and found a pretty thorough website that explains it pretty well:

http://www.guitarnucleus.com/fenderserial.html

here's a quote:

Serial Number on Peghead Decal.
U.S. made Fenders, starting in mid-1976 has the serial number on the peghead. Note the following number could be off as much as two years. Generally speaking, a "S" prefix equals the 1970's, "E" prefix equals the 1980's, and "N" prefix equals the 1990's. Note "E" and "N" prefix models are sometimes also Japanese-made (see below).
