Fender did not use pine in production Broadcasters/Nocasters/Telecasters after the original prototypes.

I thought there was only 1 BSB '53 he owned, and that's in a museum.

Letter accompanying the auction is a try-hard fake.

Other paperwork says Pine, ad says Ash. If you're selling a $75k guitar, you'd get the details straight.

Smelly.

Surely it's not his beloved "Nancy".

No, it's not Nancy. Nancy is owned by Mac Yasuda and is valued at considerably more than this!!
I've seen this guitar up on ebay several times now, but not unsurprisingly it isn't selling!
Roy might have signed it, but whether he owned it is moot!

Edit, to add..a pic of Nancy that I took at Fullerton Museum Center in 2009. Not brilliantly clear because of the glass case!

I seriously doubt if it was ever owned by him.

A quick look at that seller's negative and neutral feedback speaks volumes, IMO.

One of his blackguard Teles is fitted with a rosewood neck and a Strat pickup in the front position.

Later he had put a replacement Strat neck on it.

Roy is not only a notable Tele fan but also a high-profile Strat aficionado! :D

You can fool some of the people, some of the time. You can fool some of the people, all of the time. You can't fool all of the people, all of the time. :

What do you suppose the guitar might actually be worth, being not actually owned but signed by Buchanan?

The letter and guitar are suspect. In 1952, Leo was using flat headed screws, and the majority of this guitar is phillip's headed screws. The bridge plate uses both, phillips on the bridge mounting screws and flat headed screws on the pickup. The pickguard uses phillips as well. This body was made in 1952, and it doesn't have the proper screws on the hardware.

With time and hundred of service on this guitar chance are the original flat head screws was replace by on the shelf standard philips screw.

I just read and re-read the typed letter "give me $500 and it's yours"...in '83...well, he died (hung himself in a jail cell, I believe?) in '88...could it be that his demons... :?:

According to "The Blackguard" book (THE authoritative book on early Blackguard Esquires/Broadcasters/Nocasters/Telecasters) by Nacho Banos (yes, that is his real name), Fender began the switch from slot headed screws to Philips head screws early in 1952. The first to be changed were the neck plate screws early in the year and later in the year the pickguard screws were changed. By early 1953, the bridge and neck pickup adjustment screws, lever switch, knobs, and saddles were still slot head. Tuner screws were either. Finally, by 1954, all screws were Philips except the knobs, selector switch, saddles and sometimes the neck and bridge pickup adjustment screws. Of course, as we all know, Leo never threw anything away and used up all existing parts before switching to new parts, so there could be some variances in screw selection throughout the early years.
