That depends on a lot of things and I am sure that you will get many different opinions.

I assume that you already have a telecaster that you want to put humbuckers in, in which case you will need pick ups with four conductors, so you can split the coils.

As for switches you have three options as I see it.

You can fit a five position switch and have positions 2 and 4 as your split coils.

You can fit two push pull 500k pots. You will need to change the pots anyway if you are fitting humbuckers as a normal tele will have 250k pots fitted.

You can put one or two mini toggle switches on you control plate. I've done this on a strat but I am not sure how much room there is to do it.

I think that in order to have the pole pieces line up you will need a fender spaced pickup in the bridge.

Pickups are up to you depending on what kind of sound you want but listen to some audio clips online and you'll make your mind up.

If it was me I'd have a five way switch with a Seymour Duncan jb and jazz which is a classic hot pickup combo

thanks I will look up those options for research. I do have a 2001 American tele and will have a new deluxe by this week end ( shipped Tuesday can't wait ). one of them is getting changed but not sure which one yet, depends on which one I like best in stock form. may need to just order a 72 thin with humbuckers as soon as the wife calms down lol.
