Hi, I own a 1983 Japanese vintage tele. It looks like the body is made of 3 pieces of wood. Was this the norm?. Would love to hear from anyone in the know. :? Thanks.

I have an '85 Japanese '54 Reissue Esquire and it has a two piece body. I also had a '87 Japanese '62 reissue Tele Custom...it had a three piece body...so not sure what the "Norm" was, but it was probably safe to say two and three piece bodies.

FWIW

Depends on the age of the MIJ instrument. My 3TSB '62 had a basswood body. My 54 Esquire has ash. I bought the Esquire new and it came with the spec sheet (I worked at the music store I bought it at). I have a catalog with the 62 in it and it lists Basswood.

This changed somewhere down the line, not sure when, but I think around 2005 they went to alder as a standard.

I loved the '62 Tele Custom. I owned one years ago. I was heavely influenced by Any Summers and fell in love with the 3CSB look. If you look at my profile image you'll see me home-built Andy Summers Tele.
