Hey guys!

I want a great "hard rock" tele, dual humbuckers to kill it for high gain tones, but also handle clean. I am in a 90s cover band.

The Jim Root has a mahogany body so I think it should sound chunkier and better for high gain? BS? I know lots of guys playing alder guitars for high gain, so is this incorrect thinking?

Thoughts? Either way, I will be installing Rio Grande BBQ/Texas or Duncan JB/Jazz.

Thanks!
Rich

if youre playing high gain it doesnt matter if your guitar is made from plywood or solid AAAAA maple - the gain your adding will completely colour any natural sound the guitar has. in your case it is all about pickups, and seen as youve already decided to chage them before even trying out the guitars - which is totally beyond me  - just buy a guitar you like the look of.

im not even remotely interested in either guitarist youve mentioned, but i know a guy who gigs the squier Root tele, in a very high gain 'screamo' band, and it nails it. its totally stock, he felt no need to change the squier pickups. this isnt some pub band either, they're playing gigs to 2k+ people.

without looking, im assuming the shiflett is just a 72 deluxe tele with a fancy paintjob and i assume a more modern neck/fret setup.

Both guitars are imports. Well I have tried the Jim Root and hate EMGs, but I love that guitar. So, I will pick the one I like the most the look of and features and run with it.

Keep in mind, only about 25% of what we play is high gain. We play lots of clean and very low gain. The older I get, the less high gain I play. :)

Since you are putting your own buckers in anyway... you could save a lot of $$$ and get the Squier Joe Trohman HSH Tele.
