I have a graphtech nut on the way and I wanted to know what the strings heights should be - at the first fret, or a general starting height. Or what other methods for measurement should be used.

You just need to fret you strings at the third (3) fret and let the less space between each string and FIRST metal ( 1) fret.

Strings must not touch the metal of the FIRST (1) fret when finish to file nut slot, but close as possible.

If you need general specs, a nice start would be
.010" / 0.25mm for the lowE and
.006" / 0.15mm for the highE
(Capo on third fret & measure the clearance from the top of the 1st fret to the bottom of the string).
The middle strings should follow a descending curve in between those measures.

If you are new at this, stack some feeler gauges on top of the fretboard just beside the nut [stack height = (fret wire height) + (.030" / 0.75mm)] so you won't file too deep.
