My personal preference woud be a MIJ, however both are decent guitars.

I own a 2002 Telecaster Standard MIM and it is a really nice axe. I got it for $212 at a local shop, and it was in unplayed condition. It even has the brown sunburst finish, which is more expensive than a solid color.
Made in Mexico guitar quality can vary, so play all that you can get your hands on, and pick one that feels good in your hands, and sounds good to your ears.

Check out the Baja Telecaster model. Very, very nice, indeed. I don't know much about the MIJ guitars, but have a few Mexico models that I like. And, generally, the electronic components, pickups and workmanship in the Mexico models is top-notch.

From what i've heard and played, CIJ is almost equivalent to American. They are just more marketed to overseas. By splitting production, Fender saves on costs and the Japanese guitars are extremely well crafted. I have heard MIM's are a little more hit or miss, but they are great guitars as well if you do the legwork and find one that works for you. MIM seems to be more readily available in the US than the CIJ models so it also may depend on where you are geographically. Good luck, and as a summation of what I said, either one will be a great guitar. Just go for whichever model feels right to you. Damn the place it was made.

I think it depends on what Mex or Japan model you're after. There are lower-end models coming from both factories that "economize" on electronics. I would do some on-line research on both MIM and MIJ
models and compare what pickups, pots and switches are in the particular model you're after. The japan guitars tend to use more Asian components due to the low-cost and avialability there. I do think the high-end of the Mex range is as good as anything that's coming from any other factory. But, I don't have any experience with the lower-end models. I have only
$750-$1200 range guitars that cross both US and Ensenada plants. And IMO, the quality is quite similar. But, that being said, try to play the one you're going to take home, since there are good and not-so-good ones coming from all plants. Just depends on the wood, mfg. tolerances, finish quality, QA, component selection - that kind of stuff.
