I have a '57 telecaster that I bought used in 1964 with a maple neck. It is a left handed model (if that matters). The neck seems to be unique as I've never seen another like it. It is solid maple including the back of the neck (there is no sign of an inlayed strip of darker wood). Nor is there any sign of a truss rod bore hole in the head end of the neck. I know that some very early ('52) solid body fenders were made without truss rods but this does not seem to be the case with my '57 as there is a Phillips type screw head adjuster at the base (body end) of the neck. The neck is a "d" profile and left handed if that makes any difference.

Can anyone tell me what I'm looking at here? Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Sounds like a later neck 66-68, like this:

Please post a picture of the butt end.

Indeed, it sounds like a maple "cap" neck, which doesn't have a skunk stripe, or plugged hole in the headstock. The maple board would be glued on like a rosewood board, after the rod was inserted in the channel.
In this case, as the guitar was bought, used, in '64, so it rules out a neck made in '66 or '68.

However, maple "cap" necks were available on special order from about '60 onwards, so it might be one of those, although that doesn't explain why it is married to a '57 body...unless the body isn't actually a '57.

I certainly think that pulling the neck and checking any dates and markings on neck and body could be useful.

FWIW; this picture is a '57 that I had on loan for over six months. It's gone back home now. The neck has an adjustment point at the headstock for the truss rod. It has a brass nut. I always thought the neck profile was a U shape, but I never verified that anywhere. I actually don't remember if it had a skunk stripe or not but I think it didn't.

The neck pickup on that Tele is not the stock lipstick type.

Kind sort of DiMarzio.

I never got the full story on the guitar. The body has been refinished, but the neck has a lot of mojo. It was really nice to have around but I started to worry about something happening to it while I had it. So, I returned it, even though I was told I could keep it as long as I wanted. :(
