Back in high school and through part of college, I had what I think was a Japanese-made Telecaster (year unknown). It had the standard Tele bridge pickup and 2 single coil Stratocaster-style pickups at the neck/mid positions.

I originally bought it for like $450 at Guitar Works in Evanston in the late-mid '90s. Had them put a maple neck on it a couple years later, too.

Ultimately, I stupidly traded it away for a MusicMan Silhouette later on (though value-wise, it was a major upgrade), and I've kinda regretted it since. The trader's remorse kicked in a couple years later.

It's unlikely I'll find the one I had again (though the neck swap may help), but I'd love to find another one, regardless of neck. Maybe they even made a USA version. Only problem? I don't know where to find it. I've tried general Googling, but have mostly come up empty, as I don't really know how to properly search for it. I didn't have a more specific model or specifics that didn't turn up a lot of junk (searching for both Telecaster and Stratocaster gives results for EVERYTHING).

Anyone else remember this? Got anymore information, or perhaps where to find one? I don't really have the cash to buy, but would trade (the same '96 Silhouette Special SSH).

THANKS! I really appreciate it!

The guitar in question is a 1996 MIJ Deluxe Anniversary Custom Telecaster.

I think yours resembled more like this:

Fended did a Telecaster Plus with 3 Gold Lace Sensors which was not dissimilar to the aforementioned guitar. This Tele sported a 2-way toggle switch allowing 7 tonal options to choose from; it was regarded as the precursor to the American Deluxe Telecaster, introduced in 1998.

YES! Though I had a solid black/white (maybe pearloid) pickguard. And I could be wrong, but the 5-way and knobs may have been flipped, so the toggle was toward the neck.

Thanks so much! Now I can Google with direction.

These 3-pickup US Deluxe Telecasters lasted only one year. Fender dropped the middle Noiseless Strat pickup and reverted to the more conventional 2-pickup setup in mid-1999.

As a result the 2-way toggle switch has been deleted and the 5-way pickup selector replaced by a regular 3-way.

There was also a Custom Classic Telecaster which was identical to the '96 MIJ Anniversary Custom. This Custom Shop guitar sported a Nocaster pickup in the bridge and two Texas Special Strat singles in the middle & neck. It also came with a reversed control plate.

Reverted to a 2-pickup guitar in 2003 and discontinued in 2008.

maybe a nashville tele, is quite close to what you describe, and a lot cheaper and more common, so easier to get.

Thanks again, chromeface! That's what I was looking for.

moochy-- I was going to edit the post to say it's like a Nashville, but like a step beyond. But you're right; the Nashville is a lot easier to find.

The 1996 model is the one I was looking for. Now, to track one down...

Thanks again!

So you're drooling around a pre-2003 Custom Classic.

I'm drooling mostly from the nostalgia (and a little because of an unrelated topical novocaine). It was a great guitar, especially for the money. Lotta versatility.

You can order a MB Custom Deluxe Telecaster built in your own specs.

Since the guitar you're looking is a Masterbuilt you'll need to spend lots of money: too expensive.

This has to be a personal perspective on Custom Shop costs! Not everyone will see it like that, and not everyone will agree.
