Try polishing the pickguard with guitar polish.

+1
Put copper tape on the back of your pick guard.
Ground it if necssary.
Problem solved.

You can try the copper foil shielding if you like (or use conductive paint) but this is really only effective against electromagnetic interference, ie hum. Your problem is electrostatic interference, which the shielding is not really going to help.

If you're suffering static crackling, you're better off using the drier sheet approach others have mentioned, or (better) wipe over the pick guard with a furniture polish that includes an anti-static agent. Both of these will reduce/remove the problem for a time, but it will eventually come back.

To eradicate the problem altogether you need to address the root cause, which is actually the material the pick guard is made from. In my experience the Mexican guards are much more prone to the phenomenon, while American-made items seem much less so. Maybe your guitar has had a replacement (after-market?) pick guard fitted, in which case changing it for a genuine USA Fender part may solve the issue.

Good luck, anyway!

I don not agree , where you have a good ground there is no static.

Have you ever have static when in you swimming pool ? No because water + pool wall touching grass/ ground / earth is the best ground you could have.

I completely disagree with your analysis stiggie_9.
Your analysis is completely inconsistent with my personal experience.
Applying copper shielding to the back of the pickguard should completely solve your static electricity problem which is causing a static popping through your amplifier.

Your problem, electrostatic interference, is caused by the pickguard acquiring a positive charge from the guitar electronics.
The pickguard is not acquiring the positive charge from the movement of your fingers, which are a ground.

When your fingers, which are a ground, lightly touch the positively charged pickguard, it creates a tiny static spark, which is in turn amplified by the pickup, creating the amplified sound of the static spark.

The best method for eliminating the positive electrical charge of the plastic pickguard that is acquired from the guitar electronics, is to shield the back of the pickguard from the guitar electronics with copper tape, just as you would shield the guitar electronics from electromagnetic interference to reduce 60 cycle hum.

If for any reason this does not cure your static problem, which I predict it will, run a dedicated ground wire to the copper shielding on the back of the pickguard.
Copper shielding the back of the pickguard with copper tape will also help reduce electromagnetic interference and any 60 cycle hum you may experience.

Fabric softener and furniture polish are not solutions to pickguard static and will only last for a few minutes, with the static quickly returning.
In addition, while the type of plastic will play a role in the severity of the static, it has nothing to do with where the pickguard was manufactured.
In fact, quite unlikely that a MIA Tele has a pickguard which was also MIA, and static will certainly occur with official Fender pearl replacement pickguards.

Go to Stewmac.com and get some copper tape, apply it to the back of the pickguard, and you are done!! -- with static that is!!

Copper shielding. I shield all of my Strats, (Two G&L Legacy's) My G&L ASAT Special and My Gibson SG with copper shielding. My Fender American Standard is shielded with Shielding paint in the body and foil on the pick gaurd. Shielding paint also works but I like Copper shielding, less mess.
I have read that if you take stealwool or fine sandpaper and lightly sand the back of the pick gaurd, it will prevent the pickgaurd from getting the electrical charge of static electricity.

I have never seen the back of a Fender Telecaster Pickgaurd but the back of my Fender American Standard pick gaurd is shielded with foil. My American standard Stratocaster is a 2011.
ImageThis is the pickgaurd that I removed from my American Standard Strat. It was replaced with a new Fender pickgaurd that was also shieded.

The static electricity in the pick gaurd is just like the static electricity in a balloon. Fill a party balloon with air...Rub balloon on your shirt. The balloon will now stick to the wall because of static electricity. Now with your socks on you feet slide your feet on the carpet going across a room. Now touch your wife's ear. That shock is static electricity. Warning!!!! After you touch your wifes ear duck. :D

Hello, I had good luck with my mim tele by cutting a piece of anti static bag [computer card bag] and lifting the pick guard and control plate up, then put the anti-static piece under both and position it so 2 pick guard screws and one control plate screw go thru the static plastic. If you cut the piece just rite you will not even be able to tell it's there, bot the annoying pop when you touch the pickguard will be gone.[at least on my tele and hopefully yours also]

I was having a buzzing and as soon as I touched anything metal on the guitar, it would go away. It was driving me crazy. if I changed my position it would get louder or queter. I checked to insure there was no cold solder joints in the electronics, and it all looked good.

Wanna know what it turned out to be?

My freekin plasma TV was on. I tuned it off and the buzzing went away.

I do think shielding is a good idea too, but try turning your TV off...:)
